Alan,

Humor me here – I’m assuming you’re on Snow Leopard (which of course, could be wrong.) Could you test it in Quicktime X?
If you have VLC player, could you test it there (and if you don’t have it, could you download it and test it.)

Each plays back h.264 files down a different path.

I’m trying to see if it’s flawed everywhere or just via QT7.

You don’t need AE to test it…

Export it out of FCP either via Compressor or QuickTime Conversion, and pick either the Animation Codec or the ProRes 4444 codec (make sure you add the alpha channel)…

And then import the QuickTime back into FCP (or into motion for that matter!)

This is one of those rare times where repair permissions (from your utilities on your drive) will help.
It sounds like something that is starting up is damaged…Open your User and look under Accounts under login items – remove everything and reboot and see if it repairs the problem.)

When you say it plays fine, what do you mean? It plays okay at 1080 on youtube? It plays okay at 1080 on a Macbook?

If it plays okay on both of these, but not your MacPro, something ain’t right on your macpro. Could you trying playing it back in QuickTime X (or QuickTime 7) just to see it differently?

Rich, your information may be a bit outdated:
Youtube supports full 1080 (actually, depending – they now also accept 2k & 4k files)

Here’s an example: example (just the first one I found during a search). – Notice it does a 1080 + an ‘original”

Here’s Youtube’s latest suggestions for apple users (around Oct/nov of last year.)

Even Compressors settings are at 8Mbs a sec.

Pretty much exactly – if it’s a large file, I’d just compress the 30 or so seconds that are ‘dicey’ and upload that. Of course, I am saying that you should check it yourself after Youtube gets a hold of it…

Basically, it’s an 8mb h.264 in a QuickTime wrapper.
