I actually might suggest Premiere Pro CS5 instead.

You can copy the Video_TS folders (with the VOBS inside of it) and Premiere Pro can let you edit these clips directly. For just a couple of cleanup edits? Yeah, it’s a very easy workflow. Just copy the Video_TS folders to a media HD (rather than directly from disk) for better performance.

Yes, it’ll be fine.

QuickTime is a playback engine, but it’s also a container. There are a number of codecs that aren’t optimized for playback through QuickTime, but QuickTime still holds all the frames. When it gets to compressor, it’ll access each frame for further compression.

Before you bring your audio down to the timeline, open it in the viewer. You can set an IN point (I) to represent the start of your footage.

If you throw ANY video into a compression tool and give it a given bitrate, it will ALWAYS result in a file of approximately the same size. Whether the frame is white, black or all the colors in between. Imagine you record with your camera with the lights off. The captured file from tape is the same exact size – because it’s still recording data.

As far as your white frame? No idea – but the scale – if it’s the same data rate, for the same # of seconds = same file size.

This won’t make you feel any better – I couldn’t get it to do a CBR either. Yeah, you’ll have to pick a different tool.

Final Cut 6 or 7? If you have 7, you can skip all of this and use the SHARE menu inside of FCP.

You’ll have to rearrange the screens and stretch out the column for Colorista. It just needs to be wider.

The problem is the DV codec is very compressed. Also, don’t judge by the FCP screen but rather a broadcast monitor. At very least, set the FCP screen to 100% to have an idea of how it will actually look.

All NTSC is 720×480 (DV) or 486(Full 601).

The only difference is the playback mechanism. Some TVs/Broadcast monitors have a 16×9 switch, and some don’t.

If you’re going to play back your footage on a 4×3 tv, you’ll have to nest your 16×9 sequence into a 4×3 sequence so the 4×3 tv handles this correctly.

Some other ideas:
Don’t use the first frame of the emitter – rather, drag it to the left and make the first frame 5+ seconds in.
Slow the speed down. Slower speed=more particles on screen.
Lengthen the life. Slower speed + longer life = more particles on screen.
