  • Constant Bit Rate HD MPEG2 from Compressor?

Posted by Paul Ireson on January 26, 2011 at 11:06 pm

    Hi all,

I’ve been asked to supply some HD (1920×1080) clips encoded as constant bit rate MPEG2. ‘No problem’, I said… and then found that it’s one of the few things that Compressor doesn’t seem to let me do. It simply won’t let me select CBR as an encoding option (it’s greyed-out in the Quality>Mode pulldown menu) whether I have Generic or any other option selected for Stream Usage, whether I set Transport or Program stream… it’s just the HD thing that seems incompatible with CBR if I’m making MPEG2 files.

Can anyone suggest a way to make HD CBR MPEG2 files in compressor?

    Paul

ps. FCP, Compressor and my Mac OS are all bang up to date – no problems there.

I know, it’s very irritating that compressor locks out options like that.

I actually use Adobe Media Encoder (came with after effects) to accomplish that.

You should be able to do this. I think I know your problem. My guess is that you’re trying to make the changes from the original setting in Inspector, but the key is to first drag it to the top (your preview window will open up), then make changes, then Save As a new setting. You may then need to start over, dragging your newly named setting onto your file, and all should be good.

Let me know if this works.

    Make a new MPEG2 setting.

    Hi Chris,

I’ve been changing settings on either a Saved As copy of an original, or the dragged copy attached to the file I’m encoding in the main window – still can’t select CBR.

    Hi Jeremy,

That doesn’t work for me – as soon as I change Video Format to ‘HD 1920×1080’ the CBR option is greyed out, or changes to VBR if it was already selected. Have you definitely been able to do this with 1920×1080 video?

[Paul Ireson] “as soon as I change Video Format to ‘HD 1920×1080’ the CBR option is greyed out, “

Duh, sorry. I missed that one. Yes, I get the same thing, only VBR.

Episode will do this for you, no problem. It’s where I make most of my MPEGs for broadcast.

Ah, thanks Jeremy – shame it’s a $500 solution, but it’s a solution nonetheless! As long as I get to use it more than once I guess that’s money well spent…

do you have after effects cs4?

there is an adobe media encoder that comes with it on the installation disc.

thats how I got things going without having to buy another encoder.

you might also look into pegasys tmpgenc mpeg encoder I think it’s only $ 50 and should be able to do that. (if you have a pc you can use)

No, no After Effects I’m afraid. But the Pegasys thing sounds worth pursuing – I’d have to sort out a Windows installation on one of my Macs but that’s a pretty trivial step now that everything’s gone Intel.

Oh man, just buy Episode, you will be up and running in 10 minutes or less. Like you said, it’s money well spent. Charge for encoding time and it pay for itself, then make money on it.
