You’re looking for letterbox, right?
Create a new 4×3 sequence and drag your old 16×9 sequence into that timeline. That should do it.
If it doesn’t letterbox automatically, right click the entire clip and tell it to open in viewer. Then go to the motion controls and change the ratio. I don’t think you’ll even have to do that, though.

Why are you trying to make a DVD? Why not just make an H.264 quicktime file and play that on the laptop full screen?
You’ll need to buy Quicktime Pro for the laptop if it doesn’t have it, but I’d think it would be worth the price.
What setting did you already try for H.264? Make sure it’s keeping all the pixels and not shrinking it when it compresses.

For iPod, go to EXPORT -> USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION.
Change the format to “iPod.”
That’s, uhm…pretty much all you can do! There are no options. Just export.

The same principle applies, but you can go too far with it.
There’s no reason to burn a CD at 1x. You’ll be nearly as safe going with half the maximum burn rate of your drive, whatever that is.
And no, once it’s burned it’s no different than any other CD. The burn time doesn’t change the nature of the disc.

There’s not a “standard” size. What kind of project are you working in? DV? HDV? Something else?
What’s the destination of this project? Web? DVD?
And what pixel size are the files you downloaded?

I kind of thought they’d add one too, but considering that they have that 2nd empty bay and considering that it’s very easy to put one in yourself… Well I guess it’s not really a big deal that Apple doesn’t offer it directly. Anyone who needs one can very easily get one themselves.

The easiest way is to go into your scratch disk using Finder. Erase ALL render files for that project. When you come back to Final Cut it will tell you they’re missing. Say ok and then re-render your entire project.
Do this right before you leave for the night. By the next morning you’ll be all set with just the current render files and nothing more.
