We used to output 16:9 stuff in AVID 4:3 by just doing a resize on the clips in the sequence, Could I not do that in FCP, instead of exporting out a then importing back in to a 4:3?

    You’re looking for letterbox, right?

Create a new 4×3 sequence and drag your old 16×9 sequence into that timeline. That should do it.

If it doesn’t letterbox automatically, right click the entire clip and tell it to open in viewer. Then go to the motion controls and change the ratio. I don’t think you’ll even have to do that, though.

    Another thought.
I had a problem with mixing scenes shot in 4:3 and 16: 9 recently.
An easy way to resize is.
Bring the clip into the viewer.
    Go to the Motion tab.
    Go to Scale.
    Resize by 133%.

If you have a probem with anamorphic.
    Go to Motion.
    Go to Distort.
    Go to Aspect Ratio.
    Change by 33%.

    By the way.
The ratio question is not stupid.
It can be a real can of worms.
