Is it possible that the QuickTime files do not have the “use high quality” flag checked in the movie properites? (accessable via QT Pro)
just wondering, I edit on a PC.

The question would be outputting for what? If for further FX work, then I would output file sequences, like DPX 10-bit. If you are referring to edited project/timeline output, then whatever your destination needs, same with or without greenscreen (because your project is edited).

Good to know MacDrive is not a speed-sucker. I have only used it for basic transfers; it was a lifesaver at times.-jeff

Since there is intermediate software doing a “conversion” of file I/O, my guess is you will not get the same speed for editing.

FYI: if you have FLVs encoded via the “F4V” codec, just change the file extension to m4v, or mp4. (vice-versa works too). f4v files are mp4 files, as far as I can tell. FLVs in other codecs do need to be re-encoded.

Basic answer: your friend is wrong. I use Premiere for QuickTime import and export using Avid, AJA, Panasonic, and the ‘standard’ codecs. The only caveat is that Premiere will not export Apple ProRes QuickTime. It will import ProRes.
Perhaps that’s the confusion. Many people (even editors that should know better) still confuse “QuickTime” with possible codec choices. QuickTime is NOT a format. It is a wrapper for dozens of different formats.-Jeff

One example: I have an i7-hex system with Premiere 5.0, and it works fine. Unless you plan a dual-proc system, there’s no need for a Xeon.

For an edited master, I often use QuickTime with the PNG codec. It’s lossless compression, and typically smaller than the “animation” codec.
If you are archiving footage, why not just copy the original files (which you should be doing anyway).-Jeff

As Tim said: the most common way is to interpret the 24P as 25P; the speed change is not much noticed. The audio pitch change is noticable, so that will have to be corrected.

For what it’s worth, over the last 10 years I have used 4 different hardware i/o products: AJA, Blackmagic, DPS, and BlueFish. From an engineering standpoint (though I’m a novice-level video engineer), the AJA hardware was the best at complying to what video output should be, based on looking at ‘scopes, colorbars, etc. (although DPS was pretty good too).
So I would keep your AJA hardware, and stay on top of driver updates for Premiere.-Jeff
