I’m helping a friend remotely who’s using Premiere bundled with CS5 Master Suite, and he told me that there’s no option to export the edited video as a Quicktime .mov file. I’m an FCP user myself, am not super knowledgeable about Premiere, but am pretty surprised that Premiere wouldn’t support .mov files. Is that some kind of Adobe vs. Apple rivalry to promote their own file format? Is my friend or I missing something? Apologies for the newb question.

    Thanks,
    HL

The only way this situation is possible is if this friends system did not have Quicktime installed at the time Premeire Pro was installed.

Basic answer: your friend is wrong. I use Premiere for QuickTime import and export using Avid, AJA, Panasonic, and the ‘standard’ codecs. The only caveat is that Premiere will not export Apple ProRes QuickTime. It will import ProRes.
Perhaps that’s the confusion. Many people (even editors that should know better) still confuse “QuickTime” with possible codec choices. QuickTime is NOT a format. It is a wrapper for dozens of different formats.

That makes sense. I will ask her.

Have updated Quicktime Player v7.6.9 to Pro version but still no Quicktime .mov export option. See the screenshot:

Problem solved. My friend forgot to restart her PC. My apologies.

You were right on the money Jon!
