If I were to channel Bob Zelin, for a moment, “you backed yourself into a corner and you’re blaming the equipment. What you really needed was a good dose of RTFM and a discussion with someone who has done this before.”

That said, I would recommend the following for next time…

Since you have the Kona2, you should capture directly from the 23.976 HDCAM tapes and use the Kona2’s built-in downconversion to DV. This way, you keep the original timecode, yet you have the datarate and convenience of DV.

Then, when you need to do your Conform/Finish/UpRez, you don’t need the lousy and cumbersome CinemaTools. Everything should line up with no mess and no fuss. It even makes a great table wax.

Hey guys. I’m at WWDC. As the days go by, less and less developers are fearful of this transition as we get more information. If you watch the Keynote, you will notice that everyone laughed right at about the halfway point as Jobs was looking for apps to run after he revealed he’s running a Macintel. The reason everyone laughed is because I asked Steve to run Final Cut.

That said, the biggest issue for video will be for apps that have optimized their code for Altivec. These optimizations will need a do over.

I spoke with ATTO and they think this switch over will help speed things up for they will need to take out all the code in their driver that flips the data order around for the Mac on PowerPC.

    Hmmmm. Things are looking better.

June 8, 2005 at 8:30 am in reply to: RT 3 Way Colour Corrector in HD

The main question to ask Apple is “Which built-in FX are 8-bit and which are 10-bit?” I’m dying to know.

Keep in mind that AE Compatible Plug-ins in FCP can only work in 8-Bit RGB. The spec does not allow for YUV processing. It also allows for 16-Bit RGB processing, but FCP doesn’t go beyond 8-Bit RGB.

Thus, I think the future could be found in Motion’s FX plug-in architecture called ‘FxPlug’ that can also enable real time processing. Time will tell.

Actually, the effects are done on the CPU through the Blackmagic driver. Thus, RT Extreme or Blackmagic can be selected as the FX architecture.

On the Decklink HD Pro, however, downconversion is actually done in hardware on the card. I would imagine that upconversion would work the same way one day.

On the Decklink HD, downconversion is performed by the Blackmagic driver on the CPU.

I hope that clears it up.

May 11, 2005 at 2:29 am in reply to: OS 10.3.9 ok for K2?

I would avoid 10.3.9 like the plague. Apple took some of the APIs from Tiger and stuffed them into 10.3.9 and it breaks a few things. Since Apple does not properly document changes, developers are scrambling to find the source of the changes. Even Apple’s own XRAID has issues.

We have seen issues with Medea RAIDs.

  • We’ve seen issues with Medea RTR/RTRX drives. Kernal Panics, mounting issues. It’s quite ugly.

I can state that StuffIt is no longer bundled with Tiger. Boooo. I guess we will all have to keep it Zipped. NOT.

I can also state that Tiger needs more time at the mothership. 10.4.2 should be a marvelous release!

I need to make a correction. I meant to say,

“All of the COMMERCIAL broadcast networks have standardized on D5HD, for now.”

My pledge to PBS was not big enough, so they have to suffer with HDCAM. 😎
