I know you have one – how does it work.
This makes it the cheapest 24″ LCD for Kona 2 HD work .

    Please let us know.

Bob – the Dell 2405FPW works great with the HDP in both HD and SD. It will not do 50 or 48Hz though, so the HDP will frame rate convert to 60Hz for this display. This monitor also has HD/SD component video inputs – so Kona 2 can drive it directly with its component outputs. For 24Hz, Kona 2 will frame rate convert the outputs to 59.94 Hz if you change the “video playback” setting in the “Audio/Video settings” or “View” menus.
(By the way, you can also downconvert 23.98 HD to SD by changing the “video playback” the same way).

Bob, have you compared that Dell to the Sony MFM-HT75W? It has DVI, RGB, Component, Composite, and S-Video inputs. 720p and 1080i supported. I picked up one for $599 at Fry’s Electronics and I have to tell you, it’s stunning. Just curious if you’ve seen one of these and how it compares to the Dell.

I have not seen the Sony MFM – I have only used the Cinema 23″ and the Sony
SDM-P234b, of which the Sony is superior. But obviously, the Dell, at $1200
has everyone quite curious, and I certainly am interested in seeing the Sony MFM. Now, from John’s report, I will certainly order a Dell 24″

Between the insanely cheap monitors becoming available for HD, and the ongoing DAILY advances with SATA technology, the “last horizon” for the expensive edit room will remain with the VTR selection.

I can only hope that AJA goes the next mile, and comes out with the “cheapo”
Tri Level Sync generator. $1100 would be a nice price.

Don’t forget the hardware waveform monitor as part of that.

But its native resolution only goes up to 720p. Any 1080 material will get down-rezed. I think if you’re going into an LCD route, the Dell 2405FPW is a great way to do it.

Check out the various deals from the aggregator sites such as dealmac.com. I have seen the Dell 2405 for as little as $1K from Dell with the correct “coupon code.” The only negative reports that I have heard (and I can’t point to them specifically at the moment) is that some users have reported units with stuck pixels. Once you can wade through the off-shore tech support of Dell, they will replace defective units quickly. The secret with dealing with Bangalore, I have found, is once the conversation begins to deteriorate, simply ask for a supervisor in Austin.

We’ve run 1080 on it and it’s absolutely gorgeous. In fact, one of my VAR’s was here one day working with some 1080i footage he shot with the Panasonic camera (not sure which model #, it’s the one that only shoots 1080i) and he was amazed at the quality of the output.

Not doubting that the Dell may be better, but the Sony is definitely worth a look. We’re going to use it as our playback monitor this weekend during our film shoot. I’ll let you know how that goes.
