I think another thing to be aware of is that if you use your 1200A as a “converter”, it introduces a delay of the signal by a couple of frames. By converter I mean that is you didn’t use a Kona2 during your editing process and simple had the 1200A converting to SDI.

Also, for those of you using certain Plasma and LCD displays, many of these devices introduce a delay in the video due to their on-board processing.

BTW, Deadhead was 3 years older than us and hung out with my cousin. Thank goodness he didn’t have to take the Screwhouse Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test.

You and I graduated the same year. I went back in ’90 and it was surreal. I might go back with some alums from LA this fall. I’m dying for some pizza from Varsity.

    Walter, your wings are ready!

I’d like to be the third Syracuse graduate to agree that the Kona2 and AJA tech support ROCK!

My intention was not to offend you. My intention was to stop you in your tracks for you were wildly going down the wrong track. So what you still don’t grasp is the real time nature and requirement of video. You are still missing the point of how ethernet is AWFUL for video, especially HD.

The point of the cow is to help each other. I do it regularly and enjoy doing so. Every once and awhile, there are people who start insisting they are right and no one has the gall to tell them to stop. You were making improper assumptions on how video works. You made incorrect assumptions on how storage works. Then you made incorrect assumptions on how a SAN works.

I’m sure you are fantastic at web apps, but video is a totally different animal.

Apparently through all of your education, you haven’t been taught a sense of humor. Too bad.

Remember, this is not a durable good like a washing machine, hot water heater or my underwear. 😎 The technology changes all of the time. If knew what was coming next, we’d all be living in Las Vegas or on an Indian Reservation.

Your Cinewave experience was particularly painful due to the fact that you had to replace it with something that was 1/10th the cost if you bought all those BOBs.

The bottomline is that if you need it now, you get it. There will always be something better. Otherwise, you’ll be waiting and waiting while your competition takes advantage of these tools today.

I just wanted to add before the congecture gets out of control that using the downconversion of the Kona2 should be more accurate than the Sony decks output. Walter seemed to have a good experience with it, while I have had some terrible experiences with an F500 deck with downconversion from 23.976. It could be that model since Walter is using a new J-series. Interesting to say the least.

I don’t have a beef with PATA or SATA drives. You were suggesting some Dr. Frankenstein solution based solely on price. When you do this with video, it usually comes back to bite you on the tushi.

As you stated your new plan of action, it sounds more like you’re stating theory rather than experience. Have you used Snap Servers for video?

What does your research process include? Reading the CDW catalog?

MetaLAN may work. I haven’t tried it. I have tried MetaSAN and it works well with the proper storage.

My point was that I think you are pointing yourself into the wrong direction and setting yourself up for failure. You should contact people, namely a reseller, who has done this before who can spare you the time, effort, and anguish in creating a system that is right for you.

Incidentally, I mentioned nothing about recommending an Xserve.

    Jake,

If you think that the XRAIDs are overpriced and you think you can do Parity with a Sonnet card, one could conclude you don’t have the budget for a SAN. A NAS is not a good idea for doing compressed HD for a NAS can barely do DV reliably.
