AE works like a charm in XP64, but can only use 4GB per instance.
It’s definitely worth the switch if you tend to use +6GB of Ram

Running a quadcore and 8GB’s of Ram. No Problem here.
Only some Driver-issues with old hardware.
After Effects can only use 4GB Ram in XP64, but this way you can continue working in other programs. I think Nucleo Pro (if you have it) can adress all Ram for renderings.

HD viewing with a 750$ budget isn’t easy 🙁 but it works !
Right now I’m running AE with a Matrox Parhelia APVe Graphics card with dual screen and connected to a 24inch LCD. The graphics card outputs 1080P or 720p directly to the 24inch LCD through DVI. If you want HD viewing you’ll certainly need a 1920×1200 or 1920×1080 LCD.
The Parhelia might not be a good 3D card but if you have an free PCIe slot you can use it as a secondary card.
The Parhelia comes with WYSIWYG plugins for After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere, 3ds Max,…
From the workspace in After Effects directly to the LCD viewing monitor in 1080p works like a charm !
You should take look at the Blackmagic HD card, but you’ll need a LCD with Component or SDI input and that will need a little more budget !

AE and Cinema 4D will run on XP64 (guessing Vista64 also).
There’s even a 64bit version of Cinema 4D but 32bit version will run too.
In AE you’ll have access to all 4 Gigs installed (if your motherboard supports it)

    It’s a hardware-software-combined problem.
A lot of it depends on wich platform you’re on.
I’m running a nForce4 system (Asus A8n5x + Amd x2 4200) with a Matrox Parhelia AVPe. There are no x64 drivers for my printer, scanner …

Looking at your profile, I see you run with 1GB of Ram,
x64 is only worth it with +4 GB of Ram.

If you have a spare Hard Drive,
give x64 a try ! with some systems it works great.

Never change OS when you’re working on projects !

Dualbooting XP32 and x64 could be an option but you’d better check that on Tweakers.nl

    The best advice would be…
… wait until Vista64 has good driver support,
buy a brandnew machine and have fun 🙂

I installed x64 for the same reason,
working with uncompresseed HD AE needs al Ram AE can get!

To be honest, I’m not that happy with it ! I’m going to try a re-install of x64 and try to fine tune it, but going back to XP32 with the 3GB switch is getting near.

Using your machine only as a workstation with the bare minimum of Applications… then x64 is a good option.

When you need a lot of extra Multi-media programs installed on it, you’ll run into a lot of incompatibility issues !

and, when you have problems with x64, you’ll notice that there is not much problem-solving to find on google. Driver-support for x64 is generally terrible.

Have you installed a lot of extra Plug-In’s ?
Could be that AE is hanging on one of them.
If you temporary move extra installed Plug-In’s to another folder on your hard disk, and AE starts up …..

trashing your AE preferences is another option,
    start AE while holding Control-Alt-Shift

    Had this on my Laptop,
move the Open-GL Plug-In out of your AE-Plug-In folder.
    Try to start AE now.
If it starts you might want to check the latest driver for your videocard.
But nothing garantees it’s an Opel-GL problem 🙁

    Try Winmorph at https://www.debugmode.com/winmorph/
That should do the job and it’s free !
