is it smart to upgrade to xp pro 64bit
Posted by Frank Van mourik on April 14, 2007 at 1:25 pmHi there!
quick question! I’m now running xp Pro 32 bit. But i want more internal memory. Going up to 4 gig! Is it better for me to upgrade to the 64Bit version? And will there be no problems with my installation of after effects or other adobe program’s i have?
Does anyone know the real advantage of xp 64bit to xp 32 Bit?
thnx a lot!

April 14, 2007 at 4:29 pmI installed x64 for the same reason,
working with uncompresseed HD AE needs al Ram AE can get!To be honest, I’m not that happy with it ! I’m going to try a re-install of x64 and try to fine tune it, but going back to XP32 with the 3GB switch is getting near.
Using your machine only as a workstation with the bare minimum of Applications… then x64 is a good option.
When you need a lot of extra Multi-media programs installed on it, you’ll run into a lot of incompatibility issues !
and, when you have problems with x64, you’ll notice that there is not much problem-solving to find on google. Driver-support for x64 is generally terrible.

April 15, 2007 at 7:44 amWow! that’s not good news!
I mainly use AE, photoshop, premiere, encore, illustrator, dreamweaver and fireworks. But if i understand you correctly. You need al kinds of updates and even than things don’t work? Or is this mainly a hardware issue?
And yes i’m also upgrading to work better with HD!

April 15, 2007 at 8:49 amJust an idea!
is it a good idea to have xp pro 32bit and 64 bit installed on your computer?
can it be done? My idea is. if you run in compatibility problems you can ‘switch’ over to 32bit!

April 16, 2007 at 2:10 pmIt’s a hardware-software-combined problem.
A lot of it depends on wich platform you’re on.
I’m running a nForce4 system (Asus A8n5x + Amd x2 4200) with a Matrox Parhelia AVPe. There are no x64 drivers for my printer, scanner …Looking at your profile, I see you run with 1GB of Ram,
x64 is only worth it with +4 GB of Ram.If you have a spare Hard Drive,
give x64 a try ! with some systems it works great.Never change OS when you’re working on projects !
Dualbooting XP32 and x64 could be an option but you’d better check that on Tweakers.nl
The best advice would be…
… wait until Vista64 has good driver support,
buy a brandnew machine and have fun 🙂 -

April 17, 2007 at 11:10 amQuick one to add – are Microssoft still supporting and updating XP64 now that Vista is coming out?
I ask because I’m thinking of going 64 when I get my new workstation and talking to BOXX systems they said to steer well clear of Vista. I may have to keep XP32 on a diff tower for all my other apps then?
I run Production Studio + Combustion + Elastic Reality + Flash + Dreamweaver + Extensis Suitcase day to day, so hopefully they’ll work on 64?
Then there’s a bunch of ripping, media player, FTP & font converting apps I’d like to keep..I wonder if they’d work..Is there a definitive list anywhere on the web of apps that DO work with XP64?
Cheers.
