Great Machine, that’ll do the job.
    only 2 tips:
    -Get a fast Raid.
-Work with proxy’s if you use uncompressed sources.

    have fun !

    Right now I’m using a Quad6600 on a Gigabyte P35 DS4 with 8GB Ram at 800Mhz on XP64.
and … it runs great !!

    – Overclocking the Q6600 to 3GHz won’t give you any problems, It can handle the extra GHz, just look at a good cooler (not stock!)
    – 800 to 1066 GHz for Ram only gives you a minor increase
    – The Asus strike is a good bord and asus regulary releases a new bios
    – Make the 80GB drive your system drive and put the 2 500GB disks in Raid0 for better performance.(Backup program files to the 80 GB drive)
    – AE doens’t really use the graphic card, buy a 8800GT instead of the 8800GTS, it’s an affordable card and the performance is as good as the 8800GTS (Google!)
    – Nucleo gives extra functionality over the built in Multiprocessor render in AE. Search the forum on nucleo, definitely worth to look at !

AE works very good on XP64 but Quicktime doesn’t really like it, the problems I’ve had were minor and could always be solved with Image-Sequences.

Multiprocessor rendering or Nucleo can really benefit from the Raid setup, an extra 500GB drive for the Raid could help!

    just my opinion

Just been reading this post again, cause it’s quite confusing.

and yes !!! 3D Glasses does exactly the same,
thanks for the tip ! I didn’t even know that plugin existed.

    Create a solid,
apply Grid and set Width=your comp width, Height=2, Border=1
Apply AlphaLevels and set Input White Levels to 0
Now you have Black and White alternating lines.

Precompose this layer and use it as Matte for your 2 comps.

Set TrackMatte to Alpha for your upper-field-comp,
Set TrackMatte to Alpha.Inverse for your lower-field-comp

    works like a charm 😉

  • you can add/change custom PAR’s.
    In case you’re using Windows;
in your AE/support files/interfpretation rules.txt you can manage source file PAR’s
and in your Adobe After Effects 7.0 Prefs.txt you can change composition PAR’s (do a search in your documents and settings folder)

    … but …

you will always have to scale-up “as much”
keep your files as-is and your comp in 576x1024square and AE will use sub-pixel upscaling and rendering.

you’re A8n will see the 4 GB (with compatible memory!) but Asus maps 1GB for your AGP/PCI/PCIex hardware. In XP32 you’ll have 3GB left for your programs.

So it seems that the 1GB isn’t really lost, just strange that my previous MSI-board left 3.5GB for XP32 usage.

I only played a short time with the CS3 demo in XP64, probably too short to find any difficulties.
AE7 works like a charm in XP64 so it seems I’ll have to forget about updating to CS3.
Adobe does not recommend XP64! true !! but that doesn’t mean it won’t work !
XP64 has a lot of compatibility issues but for me it’s the only option. I have 8GB installed, 4 GB is adressed to the Main After Effects program and the other 4 GB is used for the OS, photoshop and rendering instances. Working with uncompressed 1080p … XP64 is the best option, don’t forget that AE on OSX will only use 3GB!!

XP32 boots with 4GB of Ram … but,
it depends on your motherboard/ram combination.
On a cheap MSI Neo2 I was able to use 3.5GB of ram installed and After Effects used the whole 3.5GB
    On my A8nSLI Windows32 only sees 3GB.

The 3GB switch can be tricky ,If you went through all the steps and it still doesn’t work, you could check your bios for memory-mapping settings. I know Asus-boards have extra mapping settings.
but … best thing would be to switch to XP64.

some good links on the 3GB switch:

    good luck !

you mean “processor usage” or “memory usage”

for processor usage you should enable the multiprocessor setting in CS3 preferences or buy nucleo pro.

    for memory usage;
    all depends on your OS.
OSX makes AE use 3 GB of ram.
XP32 makes AE use 2 GB of ram.
XP64 makes AE use 4 GB of ram.

by enabling the “3GB switch” in xp32 you can use 3GB of Ram. (search the forum and google for more info on that)

    every instance of AE (CS3 or nucleo) can use that amount of ram. For example with Nucleo;
AE can use 2 to 4 GB and the rest of the rendering-instances can use whatever is free.

    Buy a quadcore !
The prices of the Intel Q6600 are very low.
Buy a good cooler and you can overclock it to 3GHz without any problem. check the web, there are lots of articles on the q6600 and overclocking.
    and don’t forget … 4 to 8GB of ram.
