  • Need New Monitor – recommendations? firewire?

I have spent quite a bit of effort lately improving my color-tweaking skills, and the time has come to retire the 13-inch JVC monitor that has served as a “production monitor” for many years.

Of course I’d like a large, rock-solid HD LCD or plasma, with automatic calibration, etc, but in the real-world I’ve got $500-750 to spend.

Ideally, I need at least a 17″ SD+HD monitor (or TV with video inputs.) Flat-panel is a plus. I have looked unsuccessfully for one that also has firewire inputs, so I can monitor directly from AE. (Currently I run firewire output through an old camcorder I picked up on eBay to the JVC, but that’s a bit clunky.)

Q1 – Does anyone know of a video monitor with firewire in my price-range?

    Q2 – Recommendations? Ideas?

    Jim

HD viewing with a 750$ budget isn’t easy 🙁 but it works !
Right now I’m running AE with a Matrox Parhelia APVe Graphics card with dual screen and connected to a 24inch LCD. The graphics card outputs 1080P or 720p directly to the 24inch LCD through DVI. If you want HD viewing you’ll certainly need a 1920×1200 or 1920×1080 LCD.
The Parhelia might not be a good 3D card but if you have an free PCIe slot you can use it as a secondary card.
The Parhelia comes with WYSIWYG plugins for After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere, 3ds Max,…
From the workspace in After Effects directly to the LCD viewing monitor in 1080p works like a charm !
You should take look at the Blackmagic HD card, but you’ll need a LCD with Component or SDI input and that will need a little more budget !
