I have both Prodad and Pixelan Spicemaster. I use both of them quite often. What I enjoy about both of them is their flexibility. You are only limited by your imagination. Prodad has a bit of a learning curve whereas Pixelan, at least for me, was easy to pick up. You might also consider picking up the Pixelan CreativeEase packs. Prodad changed a lot with this latest version so I actually picked up the tutorial and am finding it very useful. You might do a search of archives to get even more opinions as both products have been discussed many times.

Yes, you are correct. The safe area is where you make sure to put your titles to ensure they are displayed no matter what medium someone uses to see your video. For instance, you might create a video for TV in the 4:3 format, however, the person watching the video has a 16:9 format TV. By using the safe area, your title will show up no matter which TV the end user watches. You can show the safe area by going to the Video Preview window in Vegas and click on the icon that looks like a tic-tac-toe picture. You will then see the option for displaying the safe area.

I picked up the Sansung 226BW monitor. Though I cannot be positive, it looks like it is currently on sale at Circuit City for $320 – a great price. They have the 20″ version for $260 which is the one, I believe, you are asking about. My monitor has a 2ms response time and 1680 x 1050 native resolution. Text is crystal clear, videos look great with no artifacting that I have noticed and Windows XP handles scaling for the widescreen format meaning I have one 4:3 monitor and one 16:9 monitor and both display correctly (you gotta love it). My new computer’s video card came with a program for calibrating the monitor so I can’t answer the question about calibration. I don’t think you will be disappointed if you buy this monitor.

Thank you for the information. I picked up a nice 22″ Samsung widescreen LCD monitor and am enjoying having the extra real estate for working in Vegas. It is nice to know you like the idea of the widescreen for an HD display as well. I know watching DVD’s on it is pretty awesome.

If I understand you correctly, I would hook up my camera via firewire (which I have) to capture into Vegas. If I want to see the output of my editing while in Vegas, I could view it using the production monitor connected via S-Video to my computer?

Thank you Mike for link and informaton on what Y/C means. I now know to keep an eye out for a production monitor that has this connector.

I will be selling (or trading a couple of things) to obtain a production monitor. Anyone reading this thread, If you can use a Tapco and/or Sprint mixer, let me know and I’ll give you more details. I don’t need the latest and greatest in the production monitor world but I would like it to allow for 4:3 and 16:9 monitoring.

I’m getting a new computer built and went with three 320 gig SATA Seagate drives. I have never had problems with Western Digital but I had several Maxtors fail. I don’t know what Maxtors are like now since I quit using them about four years ago.

Hi Gary – awesome to hear from you. It has been a while since I have posted on the forum but I do check in several times a day to see if there is anything I could answer.

Thank all of you for taking the time to respond. I will be working in 16:9 ratio so its good to know I should get the same type of monitor. My current monitor is 4:3 aspect. Hopefully I will not run into any compatibility issues with the two different formats.
