Dumb Question – Hooking up a production monitor?
Posted by Janet Turner on March 25, 2007 at 5:56 pmHi gurus –
I know this is a dumb question but I have never even seen a production monitor up close and personal. My new video card only allows for an S-video hookup. Is this the correct connection for hooking up a production monitor. I use to have my ancient 9″ TV hooked up via component cables and would judge whether the final output was o.k. for TV by how orange it displayed on the TV!
Have a great day and, as always, I appreciate your help.

March 25, 2007 at 7:04 pmIt depends on the monitor. The JVC that I use has both composite (BNC) and Y/C (aka S-video) connectors. Component and SDI in/outs are optional extras.

No, you want to go firewire out > transcoder (box or camcorder) > monitor via svideo or composite video.

If I understand you correctly, I would hook up my camera via firewire (which I have) to capture into Vegas. If I want to see the output of my editing while in Vegas, I could view it using the production monitor connected via S-Video to my computer?
Thank you Mike for link and informaton on what Y/C means. I now know to keep an eye out for a production monitor that has this connector.
I will be selling (or trading a couple of things) to obtain a production monitor. Anyone reading this thread, If you can use a Tapco and/or Sprint mixer, let me know and I’ll give you more details. I don’t need the latest and greatest in the production monitor world but I would like it to allow for 4:3 and 16:9 monitoring.
Thank you Gary and Mike for getting back to me. By all means, Gary, if I am out to lunch in my thinking process, let me know.

March 26, 2007 at 1:56 amGrasshopper, you misunderstood what Gary said which was
you want to go firewire out > transcoder (box or camcorder) > monitor via svideo or composite video.
This means that you can come out of your camcorder on the s-video out jack or the composite out jack.I’ve found the JVC monitor I mentioned in my earlier post to be, IMO, the best “bang for the buck” for a mid-size monitor.
I have 4 of them in edit suites at the college I work for.
I’ve recommended it numerous times on various Vegas forums and everyone who has bought one is very happy with it.
The comparable Sony is $35 more and 2″ smaller 🙁
For the price, you get a high res monitor (750 lines of resolution – trust me, this is VERY good), 4:3/16:9 switchable, NTSC/PAL switchable, underscan, monochrome & blue gun switches, composite & Y/C inputs and more.BTW, Color Bars and How To Use ’em is an excellent tutorial on properly setting up a monitor.

Looks like a great monitor. I’ll have to start saving some money. You don’t want to part with one do you :-).

Dv Memories video
March 28, 2007 at 6:01 pmI have a video card with 2 outputs, one goes to HD monitor via DVI, and the other goes to a flatscreen via standard monitor cable-9 pin. One of them is used for video preview. It also has s-vid out on the card, which i used to use prior to the DVI connection.
What would be the benefit of going firewire through the camcorder, rather than going out the second port in the graphics card? My first thought is the drain on resources, memory/graphics card memory. I cannot preview at full screen with transitions very well, but draft quality is fine.
Would this be different/better if i went out firewire?
I’ve sort of gotten used to it that way, and just click over to full resolution for color checks, then back to draft. Hmmm. -

March 28, 2007 at 6:08 pmThis thread is about using a separte production monitor as opposed to a second computer monitor.
For SD production, you will get a much more accurate image with a separate NTSC or PAL monitor.

July 24, 2007 at 12:23 amGary, I am about to buy the JVC monitor you recommended. In addition to the connection you mentioned, does it make any sense to connect from the computer to the monitor via component and Decklink?
Thanks very much for your time and willingness to share your insights.
Best regards,
Jim
