  • Adding PNG Titles to Vegas

Posted by Kaisern on April 4, 2007 at 2:56 am

    Hi everyone:

I’m new here and new to Vegas, so bear with me. I’m in the “poke
around and try to do stuff” mode with the software, and I realize I
    have a lot to learn.

One thing I’m trying to do is add image titles created with Fireworks
into Vegas. I created a few titles in Fireworks and saved them with
Alpha transparency as PNG files. The dimensions of the titles are
    around 400×90.

The preview window in Vegas says the project video I’m working on is
720×480. I would think, then that the title would take up only a
little space in the video–it would stretch just a bit past halfway
across the screen. But when I import my PNGs, they’re HUGE! They
dominate about 75% of the screen. The transparency works nice, but
it’s like Vegas is magnifying them for some reason.

Can anyone give me a hint or two on what I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Norm

Vegas automatically stretches any graphic (or video, for that matter) to the current project property.
If you want to shrink it back down to the original size, open the Pan/Crop window and use the tools in it to do this.

OK…is there a setting that says something along the lines of, “Display object in native dimensions,” or do I just have to fiddle with it manually? The only thing I see when I try to do this is that F in a circle that you have to stretch or shrink with the mouse, which is inexact.

For title work in DV/ DVD start with a canvas of 720×534 pixels and a transparent background – remember your safe areas. Save as png 24 with transparency.

That’s why I added the Logo Resize/Position tool in Excalibur. It will resize it back to it’s original size and, optionally, allow it to be positioned in a particular place.

OK…so I create the title in those dimensions and not trim the canvas? That makes sense. What are my “safe areas”? I’m not familiar with that term…I suppose it means that part of the image should not be placed within a certain margin area? Is that right?

    Kaisen –

Yes, you are correct. The safe area is where you make sure to put your titles to ensure they are displayed no matter what medium someone uses to see your video. For instance, you might create a video for TV in the 4:3 format, however, the person watching the video has a 16:9 format TV. By using the safe area, your title will show up no matter which TV the end user watches. You can show the safe area by going to the Video Preview window in Vegas and click on the icon that looks like a tic-tac-toe picture. You will then see the option for displaying the safe area.

Good luck and have fun using Vegas.

    …start with a canvas of 720×534 pixels…

Personal opinion here but I find that, with the excellent way Vegas handles graphics, that’s no longer necessary.
I used to have to do that if I was creating graphics on my dpsVelocity (the procedure was even in the manual).
I now create graphics at 720 x 480, do a “match aspect ratio” (easy to do with a script)on it and I’m done.
I was hesitant at first but, after showing the results to various artists, graphic designers, animators, etc., I have no qualms as a circle comes out looking like a circle 🙂

OK, well now I’m confused. So in Fireworks I can create the image dimensions as 720×480, import it into Vegas, drop the image on the top track, drop my video clip on the second track, and the title image will look right? The 720×532 thing is not necessary?

    Thanks,
    Norm

“The 720×532 thing is not necessary?”

In my opinion, no it isn’t.
Why don’t you a quick test for yourself and see?
    Then you’ll be reassured.
