September 10, 2007 at 8:03 pm in reply to: Is it just me, or does Vegas 8 seem like what 7 should have been?I see. I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. I just received an email with a special upgrade price of $149 for past users. This is a little more fair now for upgrades.

September 10, 2007 at 9:55 am in reply to: Is it just me, or does Vegas 8 seem like what 7 should have been?I don’t understand the Blu-Ray support. Vegas can now render it, but DVD Architect can not use it or burn it. WHAT GOOD IS THAT? That is what you called half-*** support!
I see little offering here going from 7 to 8. The titler, audio mixer, and 32-bit support. Other than that, just bug fixes which should also be given to 7 users.
I see NO mention of improved rendering performance of effects. Effects rendering is slow as dirt in Vegas. Using 3-4 effects shouldn’t bog down a dual-core cpu and only render at 1-2fps. That is ridiculous. Where is the speed optimization?

September 9, 2007 at 10:57 pm in reply to: DVDA4 – Insert Fade between main menu and Scene Selection menu?Eureka!!! I figured out a workaround. You can use the Navigation Tool to break the links, so only the new button works. Now the new Scene Selection button first plays the fade in, then it displays the original Scene Selection menu.

September 9, 2007 at 10:42 pm in reply to: DVDA4 – Insert Fade between main menu and Scene Selection menu?I created a button for the transition affect and named it “Scene Selection”. Then linked it back to the real Scene Selection menu. But the problem with this, is that now there is two scene selection buttons on the main screen.

Well I tried your suggestion, but no luck. It now says “MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service does not exist…..”
The service is not shown. How do I reinstall this service?

I also noticed that during the patch procedure, it hung at the very end. So I ended the windows process, and then it said it finished patching.
All the other patches for DVD Architect and Cinescore also hang at the end. I have to manually kill the process. Anyone know what is going on?

So if I just set the dialnorm in Vegas to -27db, the output on the DVD should all be set to this level?
I thought -31db was full volume, which does nothing, so -27db would lower it 4db?

I own the ADVC-300 and have been using it to convert Hi8 and VHS tapes. The “TBC” in it, is the same as the ADVC-100, which is just a Line-TBC. It is not a full frame TBC.
The 300 comes with a very simple application called “Picture Controller” which allows you to adjust brightness/contrast/auto gain/white peak/colors/volume control(bass/treble) of the incoming signal.
I usually set everything at default, and only adjust the auto gain for properly levels and the audio volume. Trying to use the color adjustments is just too hard, because of no scopes. You first have to capture some test video, and put it into Vegas to look at the levels. Then repeat the process until you got it right. I’d rather do all adjustments in Vegas.
The 300 does offer 2D and 3D noise reduction, but the 3D is a little overrated. There are only two settings(light/hard), and the the hard setting is too harsh and causes motion trails on moving objects.
If I were you, I would probably keep using the ADVC-100 and make all adjustments in software like Vegas. You get only a little more functionality for your money with the ADVC-300.

Yes, I want to set the dialnorm to bring down the volume, so DVD players can attenuate the volume properly. After setting Dialnorm properly, the reference level on the DVD should be -31db when played back.
From what I read, Dialnorm value is the average speech level in the audio track. Studios have a seperate audio track for speech, so it is easy for them to get an accurate value.
My audio is mixed, so I can’t just use the value given from Sound Forge “Scan Levels” function.
I could set the whole audio track to(-24db or -27db). This will lower it, but this is not correct. It could cause “audio pumping” when used with the Line/RF modes (Film Light, Film Standard, etc…).
Don’t the Line/RF modes only affect “Midnight mode” on DVD players?
