  • Is it just me, or does Vegas 8 seem like what 7 should have been?

This just seems pretty quick to be a whole new version of Vegas. Don’t get me wrong there’s some cool new additions, but some of them should have been included in 7. Like the titler, that’s a no-brainer that everyone’s been wanting since like version 4. I dunno I guess I feel like I just paid for an upgrade, and shouldn’t need to again so soon, especially to get some stuff that should have been included in the last upgrade.

Why not just call it 7.5 & give it as a free upgrade to all 7 owners?

Oh well I guess the best I can hope for is just a reasonable price on the upgrade (please Sony, make it cheaper than the upgrade to 7 since I just did that). Oh, and I hope they finally include the bloody support for widescreen resolutions in the higher-res iPod output, for those of us who like to do podcasts & iPod compatible stuff! That & the titler alone might make it worth it for a $150 upgrade (please Sony, don’t make it more than that!) 🙂

if you just did it, won;t you qualify for a free upgrade to 8?

It’s been a year since the last release and that’s usually been the period between Vegas releases. The exception is the period between Vegas 6 and 7 which was a year and a half.

If you remember, Vista was pushed out in the spring of that year, well before NAB. Vegas uses a lot of the plumbing of Windows and I think the Vista delay really screwed up the Vegas schedule that year. The result was probably a bit of treading water waiting for MS to get their Sh!t together. I’m guessing that the 32-bit component of Pro 8 was in development before V7 was released but wasn’t going to be released without Vista. The titler probably after V7 – I notice it uses OpenType which I’ve only seen shiped with Photoshop CS2 so far.

Anyway, I think that some of the components of VPro8 and the promised VPro64 have been in the pipeline since mid-V6.

Price? The early upgrade prices have always been less than I expected but I think it’ll be more than $150.00 this time. V7 was a lot less than I expected and I think the price reflected some of the issues I outlined above.

Good point. If he really just upgraded in August there’s a good chance they’ll upgrade him for cheap or free.

Sorry guys, I didn’t mean to suggest that I had just barely upgraded to 7. It has been a little while, just doesn’t seem like very long.

rob: Wow! has it already been a year since 7 came out? I could’ve sworn it was only earlier this year that I upgraded, and I thought I upgraded within a month or two of release. Thanks for the perspective though. If that’s true then I guess I understand. ….I just checked, it was the end of Oct. of last year that I upgraded to 7, darn this year’s gone by fast!

    Vegas 8: September 2007
    Vegas 7: September 2006
    Vegas 6: April 2005
    Vegas 5: April 2004
    Vegas 4: Early 2003/December 2002?
    Vegas 3: December 2000?

I’m sure someone else could give better dates on the older versions and the versions I didn’t list. I started on Vegas 2 but just before Vegas 3 came out around the end of 2000 and, at this point, the exact release dates are a little hazy.

Ahh. I stand corrected. For some reason I thought V4 was also released at NAB. I think I started usin V3 4 or 5 months before V4 was released

Take my perspective with a grain of salt. It’s just speculation.

I don’t understand the Blu-Ray support. Vegas can now render it, but DVD Architect can not use it or burn it. WHAT GOOD IS THAT? That is what you called half-*** support!

I see little offering here going from 7 to 8. The titler, audio mixer, and 32-bit support. Other than that, just bug fixes which should also be given to 7 users.

I see NO mention of improved rendering performance of effects. Effects rendering is slow as dirt in Vegas. Using 3-4 effects shouldn’t bog down a dual-core cpu and only render at 1-2fps. That is ridiculous. Where is the speed optimization?

VEGAS can burn the Blu-Ray disc straight from the timeline. So you can now deliver in Blu-Ray format – that’s what good it is.

I see. I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. I just received an email with a special upgrade price of $149 for past users. This is a little more fair now for upgrades.
