“The Advanced Renderer is actually pretty good and reasonably fast. “
mental ray is considered the most accurate simulator of raytracing and photon lights. maya has a deeper shader/texture toolset with a very flexible scripting language and more mature character animation tools. (this has all been said earlier).
the OP is looking to integrate “a CGI dog with a real person”, thats more than getting your feet wet!

Austin,
Adobe (or rather Apple) hasn’t forgotten laptop users;
you should be able to add markers with the “fn + p'” combo
you audio preview with “fn + >”the KeyUp may still work though, do you have to disable PadMultiply so it recognises its new assignment?

If you want believability get Maya. Maya’s native renderer is stronger. But for optimal realism you’d have to go with a third party like vray or renderman. And… you can import Maya scenes into AE, it just isnt as comprehensive as C4d.
Maya has a built in 3d tracker called Maya Live, but the third party Boujou is much better.~~~

Is there anyway to link one end of the stroke to the 2d bulbs and the other end to the 2d girl
Roland’s Beam suggestion is a good way to go. You could motion track her hand and each bulb (target the tracking data to seperate Nulls), then parent the ‘ends’ of the Beam to the Null objects.

I render it out with the native codec, DVCPRO HD
have you tried the Animation codec?

heres an interesting work-around
https://blog.damonledet.com/index.cfm/2008/6/9/After-Effects-Lens-Flare-with-Transparent-Background
if you’re going to work with flares or light effects a lot, I’d consider investing in Knoll’s collection. its way beyond adobes default limitations ( for starters the alpha channel is already figured into the effect =)

https://www.coremelt.com/products/downloads/imageflow-fx-free-trial.html
for windows…
If you have BCC you could get the upgrade, it comes with a new Ken Burns effect filter called “Pan and Zoom”
https://www.borisfx.com/product/continuum/after_effects/It may be overkill if you purchase it outright just for that one filter (that whole package is amazing though).
you would almost be better off buying a mac with iMovie (it comes with a Ken Burns effect).~~~

I have a composition made up of four layers that I need to render out as photoshop layers.
Essentially the same process as rendering a frame as photoshop layers but for an entire comp
are you talking about Compostion/ Save Frame As/ Photoshop Layers…

Now, the object wont scale until I finish scrubbing the value. I don’t know what I did to change the setting, but it’s changed.
right-click your comp tab and make sure ‘Live Update’ is checked.
there is an icon next to ‘draft 3d’ and the ‘shy guy’ that you may have accidently clicked on and disabled.~~~

What exactly do you mean by key out the ocean and create a matte?
Basically you would cut out the surfer from the ocean using a color keyer (like ‘keylight’). Barend has a great tutorial on the process of matte creation:
https://library.creativecow.net/articles/onneweer_barend/keyingtut.phpI have been working with the 8-point matte but it is almost impossible to get the matte perfectly around the surfer
thats another way to approach it, by rotoscoping. yes you would need more points, use the pen tool to create your shapes.
I would break up the rotoing to the major shapes of the body. torso, right upper arm, right fore arm, left upper arm..etc..(so a dedicated animated mask per part) and keyframe every 5 or 10 frames. It’s hard to tell what would be the best path to go without seeing the footage.
There may be a filter that can do what your describing. But I believe these two ways would give you the most control over what you want the surfer or the ocean to look like without affecting the other.
