and… more annoyingly, if im copying a set of layers from one comp into another… it reverses the layer order! as you all know… layer order is ridiculously important!!!

it may be smarter than you think…make sure you select the layers in the proper order. If you select them from the bottom up it will reverse your layer order. (in fact it will stack them in whatever random order you had selected them in)

I just could not figure out how you took the luma from an image and used it to create the same clips alpha

you can use FCP’s composite mode ‘travel matte luma’ to create an alpha channel. in fact you could do all of this in FCP, it’s pretty close to the same concept Kevin is talking about in AE. there are pros and cons to either workflow.

One of the things I’m trying to do is take video of a surfer, color the surfer and his board all white, and color everything else black

    There’s a couple of ways to approach this, here’s one;

you’ll key out the ocean and create a matte. once the matte is created you can apply effects to one side without affecting the other. you may need to take a couple of passes at it but this is what we do =)

August 2, 2008 at 12:56 am in reply to: stationary layer mask with moving image?

    the area that is
revealing the 1/4 stays in the same spot, butt the image moves
    around

it could be as simple as a precomping the image and it’s movement. then place that in the ‘main’ comp and create your mask for the 1/4 part that stays stationary.

    this is actually pretty basic.

i want to show lots of “maps” and something like a courser which is motion from one map to an other.
then the courser should fixed on a map and zoom in.

the maps move in 2d with a motion blur. the cursor can be created in AE or photoshop. you can download maps from google and experiment with AE’s transform function.

i hope someone could help me or give me a link for an tutorial

    i did a quick search, here’s a tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nTZh7tsXBs

I only want light entering from behind a door, and being revealed as the door opens.

you may want to check out https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/knoll-light-factory-pro/

Knoll Lights have great obscuration options.

The other problem I am having with Lux is that it is adding a light to my two other lights I have in the 3D room I created

I’m wondering if a precomp may fix the way Lux is reacting with the other lights.
