Thanks, Brian, that was driving me nuts. Good to know that bit if information. Couldn’t find it in the manual.

Thanks Brian and Adam, the stitch & sew tool did the job. I found it worked best in Edges mode, with the edges selected.

  • Probably for this you need to make the extruded object editable. This will make a copy of it that has the sides and the two caps in it as children. Select this object, and the caps and choose Functions>Connect. Now it is one polygon object. At this point you can delete the other objects if you want, or hide them. Select the new object, go into polygon mode and select the faces that you want to put the material on. Set the selection as a saved selection and give it a name. Now put your material on the object and in the material tag, where it says “selection” put in the name of the selection you saved. The material will be mapped to only those polygons that are part of the saved selection.

I’m actually working on a project like that now. I used a plane with a Displacement Deformer and put the grayscale image in the deformer’s Shading tab. You need to have many segments in the plane for the detail to work, and play with the height in the deformer to get it to look realistic. I was making an underwater canyon using bathymetry data; and the client then wanted the walls of the canyon to be jagged, but the information wasn’t there in the grayscale image, so I ALSO used a Displacement channel in the material and turned on the subpoly option, and applied it to a polygon selection I made of the canyon walls. I used one of the built in noise options in Cinema as the displacement. So, I ended up using the Displacement Deformer to actually make the terrain, and then a Displacement channel in a material to get finer detail. Using the Displacement deformer allows you to see the terrain before rendering and it’s easier to work with that way. If you only use Displacement in a material you’ll see only a flat plane until you render, which makes it hard to work with other elements in the scene in relation to the terrain.

Cinema 4D is not a game engine, it’s a 3D modeling and animating program. You can make models to use in a game and then import them into Unity, which is a free game engine.

There is a free plugin that will do this. It’s called OneSpline. You make your three splines (or more) and put them into a OneSpline object, and then this you can put into a SweepNURBs in place of the normal path spline, then add your profile spline (a rectangle in this case). The OneSpline object with the splines inside it acts as the path for the Sweep. Here’s a link:

Have you tried the rotation settings in the emitter itself? I’ve never put an emitter into a cloner, but I should think that would still work.

Thanks, Brian, that’s a good tip. It didn’t load the plugin, however. I guess I’ll have to contact the developer of the plugin to find out what’s going on. Thanks for your help.

Just one application on the Mac. In the Maxon folder, in the resource folder there are a couple of things that say Win32 and Win64, but nothing like that for Mac. So, maybe that means it only runs in 64 bits on the Mac?

What card would you guys recommend, if I was to upgrade? I think my boss would go for it, especially before the end of the year (spending that left over money in the budget). Anything I can do to get better performance. So I’d need a card that would be good for animation in Cinema, but also for straight graphics in Illustrator and Photoshop, etc.

Again, I’m running Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro tower, 2 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xenon processors, 8 gigs of RAM.

    thanks,
    Jack
