Thank you, Nolan. That’s what I was looking for.

QuickTime Pro is also available for Windows. It’s $29.99. It will import an image sequence, and also export a movie with a number of compression options.

You would probably have better luck rendering the animation as an image sequence, such as JPEG, and then importing the image sequence into a movie editor and exporting the movie from there. I do it this way using Quicktime Pro to import the image sequence (I’m using a Mac; I don’t know what other program you could use with Windows – will Media Player do this?) and save the result as a movie. I’ve always found rendering a movie from Cinema as a movie format to be problematic, and now I only do that for short test renders. Another advantage of rendering an image sequence is that if, for some reason, your computer, or Cinema, crashes you won’t lose all your rendering; you can just start where the rendering left off according to the frame number last rendered before the crash. If you are rendering as a movie format and there’s a crash, you lose the entire render.

    Hi Bryan,

Try this: make a circle spline. Copy it and give it a smaller radius. Put both splines into a Loft NURBs object and turn off the caps. Then you can take the larger spline and move it up or down as you wish. You can put as many circles as you want into the Loft and move them around for different effects.

I don’t know about finding the free stuff; I always have trouble with that myself.

But here’s what I do when I make an ocean texture. I often use two plane objects, or two floor objects. One is a little bit lower than the first. On the top one I use a material with a bluish green color, and a bump channel with noise. The water shader works fairly well, but if you experiment with some of the other noise shaders you can get different results. It should also have transparency – play with the settings to figure out how transparent it should be. And reflection, and high specularity. The bottom floor or plane, has a material that is darker blue, no bump (not needed), no reflection, and can be a lot less transparent. Play with the Y position of the plane to get it so it looks right, but it probably shouldn’t be too far below the first. Using two objects this way can give a good sense of depth. For lighting, you can use the sun object, and also the sky shader.

Well, I just solved the problem – sometimes you have to post a question to make yourself think about it properly, I guess.

The problem was that the sweep NURBs I was using as the cutting object did not have a cap on both ends, only on the growing end. Once I put a cap on the start end, the boolean worked perfectly.

Ah, go the other way. That’s a good idea; I hadnt’ thought of doing that. I’ll give it a try. But is there a way to set the HUD properties if I copy the whale into a scene? I’ve looked at the HUD section of the manual, and it didnt’ seem to help me much. It seems to me that if you can set it up in the original whale file, you should be able to set it up in another file with the same model, but I can’t figure out how.

Meanwhile, I’ll try your suggestion. Thanks, Adam.

    Mylenium,

Thanks for your suggestion. I messed around with it for a bit but couldn’t get it to work (mainly because of my nonfamiliarity with all but the most basic things in Xpresso). I finally decided to do it by hand, and went through setting keyframes wherever I needed to to make it work. I intend to play around with this though, to see if I can learn more about Xpresso. Thanks, again.

There are some plugins that will help import Terragen terrains into Cinema. Here’s a page where they are available.
