    David –

If Apple wanted to reproduce it I could send them a set of files today – a program file and two identical folders of media, one that will reconnect and one that won’t. What’s the big deal. Anyone who has experienced this problem could do the same. If fixing this was a priority, or easy, it would be done by now.

The problem occurs WITH the box checked. It’s not pilot error; it’s real; it’s intermittent; and it’s a pain in the ass. And of course Apple refuses to acknowledge that it’s happening.

July 23, 2007 at 5:27 pm in reply to: Settings to get DV50 in by 1200A FireWire —HELP

First use the DV50 easy setup in FCP then use these menu settings on the 1200A

    Menu #—–020–022—023—894—895—896
    Setting #–0001-0000-0002-0000-0000-0000

Sometimes you have to hit the “refresh” feature in the FCP View Menu for the capture window to find the deck. It works for me.

I don’t know why you have to duplicate every 4th frame when using SDI, I prefer going in SDI myself and have no problems that way.

Best Buy is just about the worst retailer I’ve ever done business with. Their salespeople lie and then when you come back to the store because of problems, management says that they are not responsible for what their people say, they go by the fine print on the bill of sale, which is why , by the way, your Best Buy register receipt is so incredibly long, it contains all the legalese that contradicts their salespeople’s representations in type so small you need a 4X diopter to read it.

Their prices are good and selection large, their support non-existent and their honesty lacking – I occasionally still go there for something I need, I just make sure to hold my nose when I enter.

July 6, 2007 at 6:00 pm in reply to: C Roll EDL

    Bob –

Not to get argumentative and petty about this … although since I am old and grey argumentative and petty comes pretty naturally … but I believe you’ve got your B-mode and C-mode mixed up.

A-mode is an EDL that has to be constructed in event order since underlying sync shots come first and overlaying video-only events come after.

B-mode is a list that is cleaned so that there are no overlaying events – you can assemble it in any order and it will work — but the events are numbered sequentially with the record master – opening shot is event 1, 2nd shot is event 2 till the last shot is reached.

This could be highly inefficient, even if your edit controller could “look ahead” to find all events from a given source tape, because the source tape would have to shuttle all over the place, and if your program tape was shorter than your source reels, as is the case for anything under a half hour show, a different type of sorting that would minimize source reel cueing and let the record master search back and forth could be more efficient – hence C-mode – which numbers the events from the earliest event of the first source reel to the last event of the last source reel.

Ahh, this does bring back memories – not all of them good.;-)

July 6, 2007 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Recapturing Multiclip Sequences

    Try this:

    Make your sequence clips independent.

Create a new project (lets call it X) and move that sequence into it. Close the original project (to avoid confusion).

Use Media Manager to create yet another new project (lets call it Y)-

    In Media Manager choose:

    create off-line

include master clips outside selection (no)
delete unused media from duplicated clips (yes)
use handles (optional – I always use 2:00 handles)
    include affiliate clips (no)
    include non-active multi-clip angles (no)

When you are done close “project X” to avoid confusion.

“Project Y” will have a timeline that has only the media used with no reference to multi-clips.

This whole process can also be done by using “copy” the media instead of “create off-line.”

    2gatos –

It’s called C-mode sorting, not C-roll. In on-line editing you can sort your EDL 3 different ways – A-mode, B-mode and C-mode. Most NLEs give you B-mode sorted EDls. C-mode is an old on-line technique to speed up mastering sessions by organizing the footage according to source tapes. There are 2 old third party software programs that can do this for you.

EDLExpress you can find at http://www.albaedit.com

EDLMax24 you can find at http://www.edlmax.com

I haven’t used either of these programs in about 10 years so i can’t vouch for how they work today. 10 years ago they could easily change a B-Mode to a C-mode sorted list.

You should also know that most on-line systems can do the same thing – change a B-mode to a C-mode list – it’s just a database sort. You should check with the production house to make sure they can’t handle it themselves.

July 5, 2007 at 3:01 pm in reply to: 1/2 hour show length

For Public Television a half hour is 26:46 – however you can usually be +/- up to 1 minute as long as it is not HD. For HD it has to be exactly 26:46.

July 2, 2007 at 2:44 pm in reply to: Remove the Lyrics

If you have a stereo recording, and if ALL the vocals are center panned, and if all the rest of the music is placed off-center in the stereo field – then —

If you take one of the stereo channels and reverse the phase (many plug-ins can do this) then re-combine the 2 channels, theoretically the vocals will dissapear, as the audio that is identical on both channels (center panned) should cancel itself out if one channel is out of phase with the other.

Adobe’s audio program, Audition, has an effect that does just this but the resultant music sounds awful and generally a little of the singing still leaks thru.
