Posted by Kirk Johnson on June 30, 2007 at 10:24 pmIs there a way to remove lyrics from an existing AIF file?

July 1, 2007 at 1:39 pmThere is a device that can fairly effectively remove the vocal from a recording as long as it is a stereo recording and the vocal is center-channel. This is a hardware device. I’m not sure if there is a software solution for this.

July 1, 2007 at 5:07 pmDespite the other answers… mine remains, “no.”
Because:
A) the methods don’t work very well.
B) there are few “legal” reasons to remove vocals from commercial recordings.

I’ll agree with that. If you really need something with no vocals, find the Karaoke version. That’s exactly what it’s for.

July 2, 2007 at 2:44 pmIf you have a stereo recording, and if ALL the vocals are center panned, and if all the rest of the music is placed off-center in the stereo field – then —
If you take one of the stereo channels and reverse the phase (many plug-ins can do this) then re-combine the 2 channels, theoretically the vocals will dissapear, as the audio that is identical on both channels (center panned) should cancel itself out if one channel is out of phase with the other.
Adobe’s audio program, Audition, has an effect that does just this but the resultant music sounds awful and generally a little of the singing still leaks thru.

And since 99.99% of all the BASS is mixed dead-center, IT cancels as well.
You bet it sounds awful!
