Digitized a bunch of SD video with DVCPro 50 to a RAID in our edit room 3. We moved the project file and all the media to a RAID and a project drive in edit room 2. Opened the project (6.0) and of course all the media is offline because it is in a new folder on the local computer, not in edit room 3. When we select a group of offline clips in a bin and choose Reconnect Media, everything works as it used to except it only will link one single file in the group. We have to keep reconnecting a single clip at a time.

    Always worked beautifully before.

I think this happens when you’ve moved the media by dragging and dropping on the desktop. If you use the media manager to do it, it will not show this behavior, and can create a new project file which is already connected to the new media.

[Jerry Hofmann] “I think this happens when you’ve moved the media by dragging and dropping on the desktop.”

This is the method we’ve always used and never had to connect one clip at a time. I loathe the Media Manager and avoid it at all costs. Hopefully this is just a minor problem that can be fixed quickly.

Just to make sure, you are running 6.0.1 on both machines, right? That update did fix some quirkiness.

So NOW you can’t move your media by dragging and dropping on the FINDER? Because doing so will cause FCP Reconnect to not find all the associated clips in that path?

Oh god…so they didn’t IMPROVE the MM, they broke it further? Oh how nice.

Or are they trying to FORCE us to use the MM to move files…because like Walter, I don’t even touch the MM.

    Hi Rich,

We, like yourselves, always expect the media links to be broken when the relative path between project and media is different but we are not experiencing the same re-connect problem as you on 6.0 or 6.0.1

If we have a selection of clips in the bin and the media files are all in the same folder on disk then we only have to point to the folder that the files are in and they all connect.

I’m not all that sure that this is an FCP 6 issue only. I’m still running FCP 5.1.4 on my machine. About a month ago, I was working on a project and wanted to take it off site to continue editing on it while sitting in the airport. I copied all of my footage to a Firewire drive. I have my copy of FCP also loaded on my Macbook. (It’s OK to do that)
Anyhow, when I went to reconnect my files to the project on the Macbook, I had the same problem and posted it here some weeks ago. There were several responses of people suddenly having the same problem and never having had it before. The files fail to reconnect and instead of getting the list of files in the reconnect menu, you instead get a single “*” as the only item in the list. I was also forced to reconnect the files one at a time. I’ve never had this problem before that time. FCP usually has no problem locating and reconnecting clips until just lately. It seems to be working OK these days as well. I’m wondering if some update or something else broke the reconnect routine somehow.

I’m finding Media Manager in FCP 6 to work exactly as it should.

Media manager does this without a hitch guys… I’ve been doing it for quite a while that way, and it never is failing me…

But you’re “Jerry Hofmann.” You have Harry Potter-type magic…or Superman powers…something. Things just work for you.

[Rich Rubasch] “everything works as it used to except it only will link one single file in the group”

Look for a check box that says something like “reconnect all files in path”. Make sure that box is checked.
