    Kamil –

Blackmagic cards will handle ingesting and outputting from BetaCam to FCP perfectly. They are less expensive than Kona cards, and for that you get much less customer service – but the cards themselves are very well made and for your purposes should be trouble free. Just make sure you get one of the cards that handles component video.

    Aj –

You won’t get better DVDs just by going to final cut, or Apple for that matter. There are differences in the 2 systems, and I prefer Final Cut, but not because of better output.

Premiere Pro uses sequences for Multi-cam. FCP uses clips.

    Antoni –

With the proviso that I didn’t understand a word, i thought it was quite well done – great use of sound, nice shock cut when the vamps first show up – very well done sucking-the-smoke effect.

Of course the effect of your film was to eroticise smoking, making it seem near orgasmic in impact and probably doesn’t work as an anti-smoking effort – but very nicely done.

December 1, 2010 at 4:53 pm in reply to: Finalcut Multiclip with Breaks in Timecode

    Alex –

Premiere can handle multi-clips because it’s set up is to create a timeline with all clips laid out in sync on different tracks and use this timeline as the basis of the multi-clip. FCP is much quicker to create the multi-clips but PPRO is much more flexible.

    EMC squared – 1996-1999
    Discreet Edit* – 1999-2005
    FCP 5? – 2005

The dates might be a little off.

Edit* was my favorite but was murdered by it’s corporate step-father Autodesk.

ECM squared was the Betamax to Avid’s VHS as the first commercial NLEs. PC based it had some amazing features I’ve never seen on any other NLE, but was buggy and underfunded.

November 19, 2010 at 5:22 pm in reply to: what about health care?

    Jonathan –

I agree with the idea of keeping costs down by having very high co-pays and deductibles – in my case I pay for everything up to $2500 per year. However …

Yes, there are people who have serious health problems and they should have health insurance, but most people are pretty healthy and really don’t need it.

My totally healthy son, aged 24, doesn’t smoke or drink to excess, developed “Spontaneous Pneumo-thorax” – a collapsed lung. After about 3 weeks in the hospital and several surgical procedures he is now perfectly fine and the bills were around 110K. No warning, no family history, nothing – it seems this just “happens” to men in their early 20s.

Insurance is there to protect you from the unforeseeable. The odds are you won’t need it – but the question is can you afford to play the odds.

    Patrick –

You have to lay the clip you want to correct in the timeline in it’s corrected size – the effect won’t ripple the timeline for you.

For example – you have a 2″ clip that you want to slow down by half – then put 4″ of the clip in the timeline. You want to speed up the clip to twice as fast – then put a 1″ clip in the timeline.
