You might want to look at Talkswitch by Centrepoint technologies.

They specialize in very small office PBX systems: from 2 – 8 phone lines, up to 14 extensions if I remember right. Cost around $1500. I used their smallest system for a few years, closed that office so I don’t use it anymore.

If you have an older model Intel Mac Pro (ver 1.1, 1.2) and you use blackmagic I/O cards then you might have problems. Some do, some don’t. I do – and apparently blackmagic knows about it but they can’t be bothered fixing it – the “it” is that if you are using one of their codec’s FCP crashes whenever you deal with things like CG or still images.

Other than that I find Snow Leopard and FCP to be very stable.

No changes, no help from Blackmagic tech support. For the moment I switch my Easy Setup to DVCPRO HD whenever I work with CG, Color Matts or Still Images – it’s a major pain but it’s workable. Long term I’m saving my money to buy an AJA board – it costs, but at least they have real tech support.

Can i somehow really flatten my sequences so its like i never used any multiclips?

the command is: Modify / Collapse Multiclips

so if I sync as many 5D clips with a single HDV clip, i wind up with multiple angles in the resultant multiclip

The way to deal with this is to create new master clips, one per camera angle:

lay out all the separate clips from the same 5D angle on one timeline track, spaced out to stay in sync with the longer HDV clip, and then use Export Movie to create a new clip. Repeat for each 5D angle.

The inability to use more than one clip per angle in a multiclip is a nasty FCP limitation, er, I mean “feature.”

It’s really not surprising that the cinewave could do many of these things. I’m an old Discreet Edit*or, and most of those features were available 10 years ago on those systems and the Targa board that was the basis of that system is a variation of the cinewave.

While it’s true there are options out there I would rather not have to go thru the learning curve again. Premiere is still the runt of Adobe’s litter, little brother to AE and Photoshop, and while it’s technically advanced i don’t believe their design team is particularly concerned or informed about the needs of broadcast editors. As for AVid, I’ve been avoiding them for almost 20 years now, but tomorrow never knows.

Along with those nice chocolates and the increased media support you are looking for, how about fixing some of the ridiculous bugs and limitations in FCP that still make me yearn for NLE’s I was using 10 years ago.

How about the ability to mute the top video track without destroying all your renders.

How about the ability to easily and quickly capture and automatically separate clips over time code breaks.

How about the ability to change the amplification of waveforms in the timeline so you can actually use them in soft audio passages.

How about a decent integrated character generator.

How about the ability to use multiple clips in one stream of a multi-clip sequence.

How about the basic ability to map every action to a keyboard command – as opposed to finding that some actions are mouse-click only.

How about intelligent rendering that recognizes when a change to the timeline requires a re-render or when it doesn’t. This alone would save me 30 minutes a day of unproductive time. But then again it allow me ample time to check out the cow so I guess it’s really a FCP “feature.”
