  • Decklink HD Pro + Snow Leopard + FCP = Crash

Posted by Herb Sevush on August 25, 2010 at 3:01 pm

I have an Intel Mac Pro (Ver. 1.2) with a Decklink HD Pro which I have been successfully using with various versions of Tiger and Final Cut Studio for years. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and FCS3.

Whenever I try to use any of the built in character generators or color matte generators in Final Cut the program immediately crashes with an error message that states “Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly while using the Blackmagic codec plugin.”

This happens when using any Blackmagic preset. It does not happen when using a firewire based preset – like DVCPROHD 60.

I have the latest Blackmagic driver 7.7.3 and Snow Leopard 10.6.4 with the latest Graphic Driver. The Decklink card is installed in Slot 4 in the Mac.

    Any suggestions?

It may not be the problem but Check folder:

    /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/

    What do you see?

You also have OpenGL problems. 10.6.4 had openGL issues (apple released an update but it was mostly targeted at games) what graphics card do you have?

Painful recommendations but you can try the following:

    1. Repair permissions (you can use onyx or whatever)

    2. https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1048 – Re-run the combo update this time: 10.6.4

    3. Trash prefs: use Digital Rebellion’s Preference Manager.

    4. Uninstall FC Studio and BM Drivers, Reinstall FC Studio BM Drivers

    (You can combine the above)

    5. Finally the surely most painful: Roll back to 10.6.3 it’ll 95% work just fine.

    Aristedes

    1. Repair permissions (you can use onyx or whatever)

    Tried.

    2. https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1048 – Re-run the combo update this time: 10.6.4

    Tried.

    3. Trash prefs: use Digital Rebellion’s Preference Manager.

    Tried, many times.

    4. Uninstall FC Studio and BM Drivers, Reinstall FC Studio BM Drivers

    (You can combine the above)

    Tried, multiple times.

    5. Finally the surely most painful: Roll back to 10.6.3 it’ll 95% work just fine.

The problem started with 10.6.3. I upgraded to 10.6.4 hoping to fix the problem.

So apparently I’m one of the 5% – do you have any other suggestions?

Did you try uninstall-installing Final Cut Studio and BM Drivers?

Yes, multiple times, after re-formatting and installing OSx on a fresh drive.

Since you’ve tried everything it has definitely something to do with SL in general, maybe the firmware hasn’t been updated correctly(it may need to be). At would at least contact BM and test another PCIe Slot as a last resort.

    I can’t think of anything else…

    Aristedes –

I appreciate your time and effort. I’ve contacted BM support directly, we’ll see how that goes.

    Thanks.
