The reason it’s not the point is that I think most users were expecting an upgrade, not an EOL. Having been thru two of them already (EMC2 and discreet *edit) I wasn’t looking for another.

I always had the ability to chose Avid, PremierePro, Vegas or anything else. But I also used to have the ability to choose an ever improving FCP. That is now a dead issue. Will I choose FCPX ?? Well, not in year one, that’s for sure.

I am thankful that I now have the knowledge to plan for the future — no hardware upgrades this year, since FCP7 can’t even utilize the hardware I have now. 2012 seems to be the crossroads year.

Being an old discreet *edit’or myself, you raise the point that hasn’t been made clear before. What we are seeing is an EOL for FCP. The fact that the same company is coming out with a new product, FCPX, that might or might not be an acceptable replacement for a given shop is not the point – the EOL for FCP is. And I fear it will be just as painful and costly as moving from any other dead NLE. For myself, after dismissing as “silly” all the rumors of Apple wanting to sell FCP, I’m now wishing they had.

Let’s re-do the math honestly –

Shake — Was dead a long time ago, but I like to gripe about it… Replaced by NUKE.
Cost $4,500.00

Since shake was NEVER a part of FCS, your mentioning it here is BS. Cost = 0

DVD Studio Pro — Replace By Encore DVD. It seems very very buggy especially for Blu-Ray.
Cost $1,899.00

Since they stopped development of DVD Studio Pro 2 more than a year ago if you really needed blu-ray you already bought the software you need. Cost=0

Compressor — Might be dead? wont know until june. Replacement SQUEEZE. SQUEEZE is amazing and destroys Compressor in every way except for clustering.
Cost $899.00

Color — Might be dead? wont know until june. But most likely. Replacement Davinci Resolve..
Cost $999.00

Total Cost around $1200, if all the worst case scenarios play out, less if the unbundled Color and Compressor come at prices more in line with FCP.

Yes, well ;that’s pretty obvious, isn’t it. How about if you like FCP7 but wanted 64 bit, access to all cores and grand central access to video card gfx engines – the stuff we were hoping to get with the last release. Now we’re f**d, because the designers of Imovie thought it was necessary to reinvent the wheel for people who simply wanted a faster engine. So it’s more like “what if FCP X isn’t the tool you need and because of that FCP 7 will never become the tool you wanted – well then I guess you’re screwed.”

Yes, and it also tells me that they have their hands full with implementing what’s on the wish list they compiled more than a year ago. Why don’t we wait and see what it is before we start deciding how it needs to be improved.

Error messages like yours have been appearing for all sorts of reasons ever since Snow Leopard and FCP studio 3. BM keeps thinking they’ve fixed it and then someone with a different configuration reports it. There are various work-arounds you can use once you’ve identified the situations that cause it, including temporarily switching to a different easy setup. BM itself is rather vague and mum on this issue – the final reason why after years of going with BM i’ve decided to switch to AJA with my next upgrade.

I have a small production and post company in NY. If, while producing a spot for a client, I hire a DP who is later hired directly by that client for another project I wouldn’t have any problem with it providing the DP was not actively soliciting that work during my shoot.I would have no problem hiring that DP again. I have done so and will do so in the future.

I have also had guys badmouthing me to the client during a production in hopes of stealing them away, and of course I’d never work with them again. In general a good client wouldn’t hire them, so pretty much if the client is available for such opportuning, they’re not a long term client of yours anyhow.
