Instead consider upgrading to Elements, which is better geared to editing material not suitable for editing in the first place.
DVD’s are for watching, not editing. -
Get a $15 firewire card for your PC, capture from the original tape and edit from there.
To continue the analogy, you now start out with $ 144, spend $ 15 on a firewire card, you still have $ 131 instead of the $5 in your original work flow.
The alternative you may try, but it could be hit or mis, is to copy the VOB files to your disk, rename them to MPG and try to edit these, but that is a last resort IMO.

Compress that 12 times to create a VOB on DVD, you end up with 12
Convert that to DivX, you end up with 5 maximum
Convert that to HuffYuv and you still end up with 5To sum it up you start with $144 and after exchanging that into various currencies you end up with $ 5. What are you complaining about? Don’t change currencies. Start with your original material.

If you have WinXP you can only DOWNGRADE to Vista. I agree with Vincent on this. Don’t even consider it. Stay with XP.

Partitioning will only slow it down considerably. Partitioning is like you and your wife are in your car, you want to go to the hardware store and your wife wants to go to the grocer. That will take considerably more time than doing just one thing.
Partitioning a hard disk is a thing of the past. Normally on your OS drive you will not use more than 40-50 GB max, so why waste a lot of space?
