I recently purchased a Gatway FX530VX. It came with two WD Cavier SE16 (7200rpm) 500 gb drives configured as Raid 0.

I am mostly a video hobbiest and work in standard definition video on PP1.5 and still photography on PE5.0.

I want to add a third drive and am considering either a WD Raptor X 150 gb drive (10,000 rpm) or another Cavier SE16 either 500 or 750 gb. Pricing is similiar enough not to be the pivitol deciding factor. I plan on reinstalling the operating system and program files on the new drive and leaving the two current 500 gb drives in Raid 0 for project and video files.

I am leaning toward the Raptor but am interested in others’ views on the best choice for a third drive (pros/cons) and the best configuration of these three drives for PP.

Your thoughts make good sense. Go ahead and get the Raptor. No sense in wasting a lot of space on your boot disk in return for slower speed.

You may want to go with the WD 750 GB SE 16. See these reviews on NewEgg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136131&Tpk=WD7500AAKS

May be close to Raptor performance, but quieter. And how can you not lover 750gb?

That is exactly the uncertainty that I have. A lot more gb for a little less performance. What I am not sure about is if the difference in speed for the system/boot drive is meaningful to me with PP. Specifically, is the faster seek time that the Raptor has more important than the sustained throughput metric when considering drives for the op system?

If I went with the large drive instead of the raptor could I partition it and use maybe 150 gb for programs etc and a second partition with the rest of the capacity for projects. This could then free up the existing two drives in Raid0 for video clips.

    thnx

Partitioning will only slow it down considerably. Partitioning is like you and your wife are in your car, you want to go to the hardware store and your wife wants to go to the grocer. That will take considerably more time than doing just one thing.

Partitioning a hard disk is a thing of the past. Normally on your OS drive you will not use more than 40-50 GB max, so why waste a lot of space?
