  • I’ve spoken with BM tech support and they have no idea why this is happening. The one suggestion they had is to roll back to Desktop Video 11.5 to see if the software is more compatible in earlier versions.

    Thanks for the info!

  • I don’t think it’s your computer. I have a Mini monitor 4k card that was working flawlessly but I upgraded to a new PC with a different Mobo over the holiday and now I have the exact same problem. I’m on Windows 11 and my new system doesn’t see the mini-monitor card in Device Manager or even in the Bios. I’ve done a half million restarts and re-loads of Desktop Video but nothing works. I believe this is a fail of BM.

    My system:
    Processor AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor, 3501 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 32 Logical Processor(s)
Mobo- MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI (MS-7C91)

    RTX 2060 Super
    64 gigs RAM
    Windows 11 Home Version 10.0.22000 Build 22000

  • We’ve been using Riverside.FM which is excellent. It’s very easy to use so an interviewee doesn’t need to possess any technical skills outside of setting up their own video and audio equipment. Riverside.FM operates very similarly to a Zoom session but it records each participant locally through each person’s Chrome browser and simultaneously uploads that local file to a cloud location. It records at the quality level of each participants camera. If someone has a 4k webcam, then that person will be recorded at 4k. It also records 48k audio.

To make recordings even better, you could send a real camera to an interviewee. We’ve done Riverside.FM recordings with people who have a DSLR camera instead of a webcam and the results are great. We’ve also sent lav mics out.

If you’re working on a PC, I highly recommend abandoning Premiere to do any captions creation. SubtitleEdit is a fantastic program that will very easily allow you to create and customize any type of captions. And once you have an SRT file exported out of SubtitleEdit you can very simply import it into Premiere and add it to your timeline.

I think it’s great that you’ve taught yourself how to use a very complicated professional software program. But at the same time, that may also be hindering your ability to work in it smoothly. Premiere is not a consumer friendly program at all. It’s designed for video professionals but all that really means is that the leaning curve can be steep if you aren’t already fully trained in the craft of editing. There are simpler options like Adobe Rush for those who may not need all of the bells and whistles of Premiere.

  • Disappearing projects can be eliminated very easily. Make an autosave folder in a location separate from your main project location. Secondarily, select “save backup project to creative cloud.” If you do these two things it’s simply not possible to lose project files.

In the future just bring it into AfterEffects. It’ll be much easier than in Premiere.

An update to the Podcast omission of transcripts. It looks like the New York Times is now offering transcripts with each podcast release as can be seen on today’s The Daily podcast. Hopefully other podcast outlets will follow suit.

The real innovation for audio is happening in the podcast space. I would encourage folks to dive in because there’s a wealth of fantastic programming to be enjoyed like Jad Abumrad and Shima Oliaee’s epic nine part series “Dolly Parton’s America” which won a Peabody award.

And Herb, sometimes audio storytelling is more rewarding than video storytelling because your mind creates it’s own pictures to go along with the story.
