Hi David. I might need a bit more clarification as to the differences. The scenario you are describing is pretty much how I use Mimiq. An assistant and me on two computers. (I’m mostly PC, but i have used Mimiq on 1 pc and 1 mac as well) My storage is a 10 g share, but basically…looks like the same thing on the surface.

You will of course find for a lot of stuff like this, most of us would prefer to buy the software once, and be done. I’ve been on Mimiq for 2.5 to 3 years now, which if it was subscription rate of 20 (i’m assuming US dollars…which is about 30 dollars for me) is already much expensive than Mimiq cost to buy outright.

  • Any time i get a list from another editor, i ask them to “commit” their multicams. Most NLE’s have a way of taking a multicam sequence, and – essentially- taking away the multicam ability.

This commitment is usually needed for the online box to do a proper conform. From Avid, an uncommitted multicam sequence will usually show proper clips from 1 of the cameras, and black from the other. I haven’t received a FCPX timeline for a while, so i can’t say for certain if it would show offline, but i would certainly start by committing your multicams, or what ever final cut calls it.

Its not unheard of for some plugins to be a beast. You didn’t mention any system specs, so its hard to say “your system is underpowered” or “hmmmm should fly on that box” I wouldn’t expect real time playback on all boris fx plugins. Some will be worse than others. Taking forever to render…I guess that depends on your definition of forever. Is the box actually stopping…1 or 2 fps render, or is a 10 min clip taking 20 to 30 mins to render? If it is a 1 second clip, and it’s taking 5 mins to render, than, yes, I would say you have an issue.

I wouldn’t compare Boris to Resolve fx. One is built and tuned specifically for the program…another is not.

  • Never really used fairlight, but i’m guessing, as with most things Resolve, you still need to go through BM hardware for any kind of input. I doubt plugging a mic directly into you computer will achieve anything. In the old Resolve world, even with hardware, you could not capture audio only, and had to have a video signal going in as well, so that my also be part of it. Again, I don’t use fairlight, but this is where I would start looking.

Unfortunately, i look at items like this, think it shows possibility, then get to the pricing, and see a monthly fee, and go “no thanks” It looks to be (essentially) mimiq, but on a monthly rate. And Mimiq runs both pc and mac. Since this is software only, you are probably going to need a 10g connection between your computers, and drives fast enough for that throughput, unless you plan on running fairly small proxys, so there will possibly be some hardware investment needed as well. As their disclaimer states: Performance is limited to your ethernet connection.

Resolve is different…it works on a database system, so you either need to figure out how to share your database over the internet, or export a project each time.

“All my 60fps clips say offline and when I try to link them the clips aren’t even available to select.”

    Can you expand on this?

Is this a list you are bringing in from Premiere?

Are you saying in the media page, you can navigate to the folder where the footage lives, but the clips aren’t showing up?

Since you are self proclaimed Newbie…perhaps a bit more detail in the procedure you have been doing. Might be a simple misunderstanding of how Resolve works.

Typically, simply duplicating your timeline before any relinking, or linking to new versions is all that is required to keep your original versions safe.
