Avid storage sharing – another new software
Posted by Neil Sadwelkar on December 11, 2020 at 1:29 pmXatlast has been released. Anyone try it?
On their page I, maybe I missed it, but there’s no mention of one needing to have MC ultimate to make this work.

December 13, 2020 at 4:48 pmUnfortunately, i look at items like this, think it shows possibility, then get to the pricing, and see a monthly fee, and go “no thanks” It looks to be (essentially) mimiq, but on a monthly rate. And Mimiq runs both pc and mac. Since this is software only, you are probably going to need a 10g connection between your computers, and drives fast enough for that throughput, unless you plan on running fairly small proxys, so there will possibly be some hardware investment needed as well. As their disclaimer states: Performance is limited to your ethernet connection.

December 14, 2020 at 1:20 pmThe monthly pricing doesn’t make it very attractive, and you need to already have the machines. Indeed, Mimiq is probably more interesting. Also, if you buy a simple Nexis Pro, the monthly cost is probably not higher at all.

December 21, 2020 at 12:07 amHi, Glenn. I am the creator of Xatlast, so I would be happy to hear your views about pricing, or anything else that you find relevant. One main difference with our software is that you can run it with just two macs, for example, one editor and one assistant editor. So, the assistant editors Mac would for example have the a RAID connected to it, and the editor connects to that Mac and drives. For things like DNxHD36, regular ethernet works fine. With higher resolutions and more streams, you will need faster drives and eventually a faster network. So, it is a bit different than MIMIQ. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated.

December 21, 2020 at 12:08 amHi, Job. Not sure what the monthly fee is for a Nexis, but our software starts at 19.99USD/month. So, just guessing that a Nexis is a bit more 🙂

December 21, 2020 at 12:10 amI forgot to mention, that if you would be interested in testing the unlimited version, I can get you a license you can use for free, for a longer period of time.

December 21, 2020 at 12:11 amHi Neil – did you try it? Let me know if I can help in any way.

December 21, 2020 at 4:42 amDavid,
Yes we tried it. In a situation similar to what you described. Two Avids working together on the same media. Both had drives connected to them and media had to be shared quite often. These were in a VFX facility with hundreds of machines so they were on a large network. There, I guess because of the traffic, Xatlast was a bit of a struggle to work. Their IT dept tried to make the share going, and eventually gave up and connected the systems directly with a cable to each other. Besides, they were the average Windoze folks so they couldn’t even figure out networking and sharing on a Mac.
This was all last year, when the world was a different place.
Then eventually in Feb 2020 or so, they bought Mimiq since the version of Xatlast they had then wasn’t working out. I too was travelling so I couldn’t support them.
In March everything changed for us and we all had to move work home. So, Teradici, and these two Avids functions changed and they were in different homes. One of these two Avids is still at a home, and the other is at work with the editor coming 2-3 times a week.
Hopefully it will get better and we will have people working together not from homes.
But I’m still curious. Does Xatlast need Avid MC to be MC|Ultimate or does Xatlast work with Avid MC|Standard. One or both?

December 21, 2020 at 6:54 pmHi David. I might need a bit more clarification as to the differences. The scenario you are describing is pretty much how I use Mimiq. An assistant and me on two computers. (I’m mostly PC, but i have used Mimiq on 1 pc and 1 mac as well) My storage is a 10 g share, but basically…looks like the same thing on the surface.
You will of course find for a lot of stuff like this, most of us would prefer to buy the software once, and be done. I’ve been on Mimiq for 2.5 to 3 years now, which if it was subscription rate of 20 (i’m assuming US dollars…which is about 30 dollars for me) is already much expensive than Mimiq cost to buy outright.

December 28, 2020 at 3:44 amBut its still not clear if Xatlast needs the Avid MC to be MC Ultimate or will work with MC standard. If Xatlast can work on MC standard then the difference in pricing between MC Standard and MC ultimate is made up by the price of Xatlast.

December 28, 2020 at 4:47 pmI’m not sure I follow your logic. How does Standard vs Ultimate affect bin locking?
