I was having this problem yesterday myself and this was exactly it. The external HD is FAT32. The resolution is to save the file to your internal hard drive and then move the file. On my post further down, someone suggested that I back up all of the info on my external HD and then reformat the drive for MACOS Not Journaled. He said this would solve any future problems with trying to export large files to this external drive.

Yes it is a FAT32. I can see that. So, do you mean I can only save 4GB of data at one time? That seems ridiculous. Is there a way to fix that?

I am using an external hard drive. Formatted to FAT32 I don’t know. It is formatted for MAC. I have 185 gigs of space on the drive. It’s only 45 minutes, so it can’t be that huge. What is FAT32? I will look into the prefences option a little later.

I’m getting this “File Error: Illegal Name” message when I’m trying to export my file into a Quicktime movie. I read through the other threads and I tried all of these suggestions. I checked my System Settings, I closed all other applications, my file names are only .aiff and .mov, I renamed the file and saved it as something else. I’m not using any other files. What could be the problem? I’m going nuts? Thanks for your help!

Do you guys know if I need to download the updates for FCP in succession or can I just download FCP 6.0.3 and get everything I need? I have 6.0 and have never updated it. My Mac was not plugged into the net. Is there a benefit to having 1 version over the other? Where do I find these updates? I went to the Apple site, but I guess I suck at navigating through it, because I could not find what I was looking for. Thanks.

Thanks guys! That’s exactly what I’m trying to do. Educate myself a bit on what I need right now. I appreciate the feedback. That is sort of along the lines of what I was thinking as well. That, with the software, it’s a good deal. Without and without install disks, it’s an expensive computer. Okay, I’ll keep looking and keep my options open.
