I’m having a problem with a General Error message appearing when I try to render my sequence. It starts off and says it needs to render for 2-3 minutes even though what needs to be rendered is only a couple of seconds. It starts to render and then I get a General Error message. My files get rendered, but I’m concerned about this message. I have a clip that is only a 5 min vid, but I’m having problems after only about 1 min into the program. I haven’t built out the other 4 minutes. With this general error message, am I going to be able to complete my project? How can I get rid of this message? Thanks for your help.

I don’t have any answers…but my first step is usually to take the exact error message, put it in quotes and Google it…often, if it is a somewhat common problem, you may find others who have had the same problem and then often find solutions as well.

I’m assuming that the error message actually has some substance instead of something that just says “Error Message”…as in, if it popped up and said “Error rendering selection due to problem 2345xx” or whatever…then take that exact message, put it in quotes (that is important) and Google it.

    Just an idea…

    Hi
Whilst Shane has a myriad of stock answers I only have one or two 😉
In my experience a General Error whilst rendering is most often caused by a clip on the timeline that has an inconsistent frame rate.

QuickTime doesn’t care if a clip’s frame rate is variable (as in a slideshow of differing length stills) but FCP can’t handle even the slightest deviation from the project’s timebase. And because the timebase is so fundamental to the essence of an FCP project, the error that it throws up is as general as it gets… 😉

My solution has turned out to rebuild the suspect clips – either by Exporting from QT Pro with recompression, or Conforming the clip to the project’s frame rate using Cinema Tools.

Of course you have the problem of identifying the culprit clip(s), but usually they are the result of a different workflow – composited or transcoded clips, and easy to spot.

    Hey Paul!
That was the problem. No more error message.

Shane, the message did just say “General Error!”
    Nothing else.

    Thanks for your help.

    hey there.

i’m working with footage which is a .jpeg sequence converted by quicktime pro into a 24fps .mov file.

when loaded into FCP 6.0 on my macpro 2×2.8Ghz 10GB RAM machine, in an NTSC timeline, the footage won’t render without giving a “GENERAL ERROR” message.

i tried a 23.98 and a 24 fps sequence, and got the error message both times.

    any ideas?

    thanks.
