Illegal File Name – File too big
How’s it going? I searched through the threads to find an answer to this question and I found some from last year. I went through all of the suggestions, I checked my System preferences, I checked my file names, I saved it as a different name. I even tried to export using Qiuicktime Conversion. When I tried to use Quicktime conversion, the message I received was File Too Big. The movie is 45 minutes long. There’s not much too it as far as render files go. I only color corrected it. No transitions, etc. The files I’m using are all .mov and .aiff, so, I’m really cornfused as to why I can’t export this file. I’m going nuts! Thanks!

kinda reaching for straws here, but you never know…check where you’re exporting to, make sure there is enough space? Also, if you’re exporting to a firewire hard drive, it has to be formatted for mac…if it’s formatted for pc there’s a file size limit. If you’re on a mac, and using mac formatted hardware, you could try trashing your Quicktime and your FCP preferences, then restart. Good luck!

I am using an external hard drive. Formatted to FAT32 I don’t know. It is formatted for MAC. I have 185 gigs of space on the drive. It’s only 45 minutes, so it can’t be that huge. What is FAT32? I will look into the prefences option a little later.

Hi George,
Most of the HDs comes formated as FAT32 because they can be read by Mac and PC.
But this system limits the size of the files to 4GB.
Open the DiskUtility and have a look to the format.

Yes it is a FAT32. I can see that. So, do you mean I can only save 4GB of data at one time? That seems ridiculous. Is there a way to fix that?

Exactly.
Back-up the stuff in the HD and re-format it as MacOS Extended “Not Journaled”.

Awesome! Okay, thanks! I will do that. I saved the file to my internal hard drive and it worked just fine. Thanks for your help. I will reformat the drive.
