“using a component to BNC cable from my VHS recoder”
I’m curious to what you are using here Jasmine. Is it a 21-pin SCART to three BNC connectors you are using? If that’s the case, you might get very varying results (some consumer decks and tv-sets doesn’t even have those component pins connected to anything internally). Best bet if your output from the VHS deck is SCART, is to get a SCART to Composite adapter cable and run that to your BMD. Without some time base correction the video might be choppy though.
If your deck has separate component outs on the back (not RGB, but Y, Cb and Cr), and they are working with DVD-playback and not VHS, I think your problem is with the deck.
Hope you’ve worked it out.

I’m also very interested in seeing how to set up an infrastructure using several Videohubs, but I don’t think I can make it to Singapore this week 🙂 Any chance of having a look at some documentation of how you’ve implemented that? Even a scetch on a napkin will do.
cheers,
Geir.

February 28, 2006 at 2:48 pm in reply to: Capture problems using Panasonic AJ-D650There is a problem with the Panasonic RS-422 protocol in Final Cut v. 5, where Final Cut misenterprets an error poll. This results in the error message in Final Cut. There is no actual error with the tape.
The fix is a small “plug-in” that disables something called altETTpolling in Final Cut. Mail me at geir.ove.thorsveen@hil.no, and I’ll send you the fix and instructions to where you put it as soon as possible.

January 4, 2006 at 11:39 am in reply to: BM Decklink Drivers removing the Apple HDV codecI’ve experienced the same on our BMD equiped G5s, all five of them, no HDV codec after installation of the BMD drivers. It’s not really a big issue here yet as we don’t do HDV, but I’d like to see some answers on this as well.
best,
Geir Ove.

December 28, 2005 at 10:11 am in reply to: BLACKMAGIC DECKLINK EXTREME vs. AJA IO LA“Also, does anyone know if Blackmagic Decklink Extreme is available for the new PCIe Quad (I couldn’t tell from their website)?”
Yes, it’s available in a PCIe version. We are running five machines with the Extreme cards, and are very happy with them. There are some limitations there that you sometimes need to work around, but for a product under the 1000$ mark, it’s outstanding. Service is good, drivers are generally very reliable.
We had a lot of problems with our AJA Io initially, but firmware and drivers seems to work ok now. I can agree that having a FW400 device brings some portability and flexibility to the table, but I’d choose the realiability of a PCI slot over that any day.

Should work just fine with either the Blackmagic 8-bit or 10-bit easy set-ups. The SDI card on the DVCPro deck converts the DV video to 8-bit 4:2:2, so it should work just like any other SDI source. Are your input settings under “Apple menu”->”System settings” (or something like that, non-english OS here)-> “BMD Decklink” set to SDI?
Cheers,
Geir.

November 9, 2005 at 11:08 am in reply to: DeckLink Extreme – G5 – audio in FCP 4.5 only works sporadicallyIt could be the fact that your are on an unsupported combination of OS, FCP and BMD driver versions.
Look here for supported configurations: https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=89As that document explains there is no official support for FCP 4.5 in Tiger, so just upgrading your OS might not be desirable. The best option would probably be to go back to OS 10.3.8, or go all the way to 10.4 with FCP 5 and the newest decklink drivers.
Also, there were some compatibility issues with older DP 1.8s, but if your G5 has PCI-X architecture I don’t think that should be the problem (if I recall correctly the macs that had this problems were the PCI only models).

Under the Blackmagic Decklink controls in System Settings you should have a Proc Amp tab that will allow you to adjust Video Gain and Chroma Gain for your analog inputs on the BMD Extreme card. They are adjustable to 0.01 accuracy.
The Blackmagic Decklink Extreme card will always output on both SDI and analog outputs, therefore the only option you have under Outputs is between Analog Composite or Analog Component. In composite mode it will output a PAL or NTSC signal on the Y connector, in component mode it will output Y, R-Y and B-Y on the respective connectors. SDI out will always be active regardless of the analog choices.
Hope that helps some,
Geir.
