Windows formatted hard drive to use with FCP 5
Posted by Dave Jenkins on November 9, 2005 at 3:50 amIs it possible to use a Windows formatted firewire hard drive with FCP 5 as a media drive or storage drive?
Thanks,

November 9, 2005 at 3:57 amNope. You will suffer dropped frame problems, along with a whole host of other ugliness.
A FCP media drive needs to be formatted HFS+.

November 9, 2005 at 4:20 amHow about for storage and to let my client look at the DV Quicktime files (in Quicktime) that were captured in FCP?

In order to allow a hard drive to be used by both platforms you need to format the drive in FAT32 binary. I’m not sure but I think the Mac OS program Disk Utility might be able to do this. The big thing to remember here is that you cannot have any shared files larger than 4 GBytes in size or you invite read problems. Bear in mind that I’ve personally never done any hard drive file sharing between platforms. I’m just going by what others have recommended and what the file size limitations for FAT32 are as per the Microsoft Website.
Others here have recommended a program that allows a Windows machine to read (or even write to) a Mac HFS+ formatted disk. I just can’t remember at the moment what the darn program name is. I do know that the software is made to be installed on the Windows machine, and not the other way around.
Hope this helps.

November 9, 2005 at 2:38 pmFAT32 has a 2GB limit. If you’re just passing around QTs, no problem, as long as they are under 2 GB. Just don’t try to edit off on it!
But if that program works for you, this doesn’t matter!

I also thought that the file size limit for FAT32 was 2 Gbytes until about 6 months ago when someone in the forum pointed out that the limit had been increased to 4 Gbytes. Check it out @ Microsoft.com

Ahhh, the FAT32 FW drive I’m thinking of belongs to a client. It’s been around since 2003 and hasn’t been reformatted!
Learnin’ stuff every day!
thanks, Don!
