  • BM Decklink Drivers removing the Apple HDV codec

Posted by George on January 3, 2006 at 11:28 pm

I post this a couple of weeks back and was told by BMD that the BMD codecs don’t delete the Apple HDV codec. I am not so sure I believe the response however as a very recent posting by Cloudchaser on this board presented the exact same problem and conclusion.

Also even after replacing the AppleHDV.component in the /library/quicktime folder its still does not work.. it would be really bad if I had to reinstall the entire FCP studio because of some issue with BMD.

I have looked at the G5’s in the apple store without BMD drivers and sure enough they have the AppleHDV.component and the native HDV capture works just fine…

I’d like some answers.. or I may seek a refund.

I’ve experienced the same on our BMD equiped G5s, all five of them, no HDV codec after installation of the BMD drivers. It’s not really a big issue here yet as we don’t do HDV, but I’d like to see some answers on this as well.

    best,

    Geir Ove.

    Hi,

We do not remove anything as there are no such facility in the installer. I’m also unable to replicate this issue over here.

What is the version of Final Cut Pro do you have installed? Can you send me a screenshot of your /Library/Quicktime folder in List View before and after installing the v5.2.4 driver ensuring that the ‘Date Modified’ column is shown ? Did you run the “Uninstall Blackmagic” application before installing?

[George] “Also even after replacing the AppleHDV.component in the /library/quicktime folder its still does not work.”

What exactly is not working? What error messages are you getting?

    regards

By re-introducing the AppleHDV.component for a second time, the problem is gone.

I was using the latest version of FCP.

The error occured when trying to use any of the HDV – 1080i/60 HDV – 1080i/50 or the 720 presets in FCP. the error message was “codec missing”.

The solution appears to be reloading the file mentioned above into the /lib/qt folder

    Hi!

Same thing happened to us – installed the latest BM driver, suddenly Final Cut would not open HDV timelines – “Codec missing” – reinstalling the HDV codec fixed the problem.

    Greetings

    Hi guys,

We’re still looking into this issue.

Can you please try installing our drivers again, but this time, choose the “Custom” option and de-select the Apple Uncompressed 4:2:2 codec. Please try this and see if it makes a difference. Make sure you run the “Uninstall Blackmagic” application first.

Send us a copy of your system profile. Just do a ‘Save As…” in the System Profiler 4.0 (XML) format. Just email it to support[at]blackmagic-design.com. Replace [at] with @.

Also, it might be worth having the /Library/Quicktime folder open and see at which stage of the installation process does the AppleHDVCodec.component disappear.

    regards

Just for clarification, I never determined conclusively that the Blackmagic driver uninstaller hit this file – it was just a thought I had while troubleshooting the problem. That could be the culprit. Also could be that I upgraded my system to Tiger instead of doing a clean install. Or a problem with Apple’s installer. Certainly things to investigate though.. at least now a workaround to the issue is known.
