    Hi,

I’m trying to capture some DVCAM and DVCPRO footage using the SDI port on a Panasonic AJ-D650 deck. I have a decklink extreme with FCP 5.04 and have a dual G4 1.2 gigahertz. I have captured succesfully many times using Sony decks, but this is the first time I’ve used a Panasonic deck. I’ve navigated all the menus and believe the settings are correct, however I keep getting errors after about 2-5 minutes of capture saying “Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport wihtout checking VTR first.” I’ve tried packing the tape repeatedly, and have tried several other tapes. All produce the same problem. I suppose the deck could have some sort of problem, but it was working fine for other people recently, so I’m wondering if there is something else going on. Could a bad cable produce a result like this? Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers

There is a problem with the Panasonic RS-422 protocol in Final Cut v. 5, where Final Cut misenterprets an error poll. This results in the error message in Final Cut. There is no actual error with the tape.

The fix is a small “plug-in” that disables something called altETTpolling in Final Cut. Mail me at geir.ove.thorsveen@hil.no, and I’ll send you the fix and instructions to where you put it as soon as possible.

    Geir.

    Hi,

I haven’t received this fix yet… So I’ve continued to research work arounds. According to someone else I’ve talked to, he had the same problem and solved it by switching his device control to a “keyspan”.

    Hi Julian

I can lend you a Keyspan adapter if you want to try it out.

    Thanks John.

Brighlight is digging around too see if they have an extra one kicking around. But If this fails to work out, I just might take you up on your offer.
