No, DVD requires that the video be compressed to Mpeg format.

When dealing with DV AVI on the timeline, the only things that are rendered (re-encoded)are where you’ve made changes to the original video (transitions, color corection, etc.).
If you capture a DV tape, then print it back to tape from the timeline without making changes, it should be identical with no loss.

After completing an edit, you can certainly print to tape and then recapture that, but you wouldn’t be able to change a transition from one to another because you need the orginal source material for that.

Let’s back up here and figure out what you are actually trying to do.

Is your original source DV? If so, just hang onto the tapes which you could always recapture if the media is no longer avaialable to the computer when you reopen your .veg (project). Just make sure and also save any graphics files, etc that are not tape-based.

I would try by creating a VHS tape with all black video, then capturing the acutal rewind noise (assuming the artifacts showed as light areas, then use the result as a mask.

To make this easier and avoid errors when I open the render dialog, I always single click the rendered mpeg file to put the name down in the file name box, then change the render format to AC3. Less typing, and you can be sure that the root names match up.

Then, when you drag it out past the end it stays on the last frame.

With computer speed and hard drive capacity and prices what they are these days, off line editing is an obsolete concept unless you are working with formats with very high capacity or throughput requirements.

Use a mask with a feathered edge. You can make any shape you need with the Bezier mask tool that is part of Pan/Crop.

DVDA is not that good at estimating the total disc space used. Using explorer, check to see what your actual file sizes are.
