As always, lossles or uncompressed files can be better quality, but come at the cost of much bigger file sizes. For a large project, this means you may have a storage problem as well as playback problems.
Why don’t you try out a sample of each and see what you end up with?

In the AC3 Custom settings, set the Preprocessing>Line mode profile to: NONE

In Vegas you would just record the audio coming into your sound card right into an audio track.

There are new, solid-state devices I’m sure, but check out MiniDisc recorders. They’re pretty inexpensive, very small and work well for video applications.

I’d recommend taking advantage of nested .veg files in Vegas 6 and assemble the segments in a master project so you don’t have an intermediate render at all.
BTW, re-rendering Mpeg files has been discussed here MANY times including a couple of days ago.

They may be able to get by, but having DV media on the system drive is asking for trouble.

Just point the menu audio to a different file. It will help if the audio is the same length as the video you are looping.
Loop by setting the End action command to Loop.
