I’ve been using a handheld Sony DAT recorder to record voice-overs in studio and also for un-synched audio in the field for a few years. The unit seems to be running on its last legs and I’m looking for a replacement. I’m wondering if any folks on this forum know of any small, portable — but high quality — recorders that use media other than tape; for example flash memory or perhaps small disk drives like IBM’s Microdrive. (I think flash memory might not be fast enough to record DAT-quality audio but I’m not sure.)

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Thanks.

There are new, solid-state devices I’m sure, but check out MiniDisc recorders. They’re pretty inexpensive, very small and work well for video applications.

I used to use a Sony mini-disc recorder, but now use an iRiver recorder – the H120 which I think has been replaced by newer models now.

I’ve been having very good luck with the Marantz PMD660 — records onto Compactflash cards or microdrives, has XLR inputs, and is small enough to hang on a mike stand.
