BTW, USB 2.0 is a bit FASTER than firewire, so if your drive enclose has USB 2.0, use that instead of firewire.

Laptop firewire cards do not need an external power supply. AFAIK, they don’t have any significant drain on the laptop battery either.
Firewire 800 will do not good unless you have firewire 800 drive/enclose hooked up to it, which gives you no advantage when working with DV.

I doubt that an increase in RAM will make any significant difference for you.
First thing I would check is to see if you actually have stray bits of media left over from earlier splitting or other opertaions.
Make a new video track above, carefully select only the main piece of media and use the 8 key to pop it up to the new track. That should reveal if there are any stray bits lying around.

It could be a resourse conflict, or just little green gremlins. Hard to know for sure. Try decreasing the size of your preview window and see it that helps.

Yes, it SHOULD be faster with your source and destination on two different drives. The degree of significance will depend on how long a piece you are creating and what’s involved in the content.

I always keep the audio as the last thing I tweak in the project.
For one thing, audio volume is cululative, so there’s no sense in adjusting audio on one track if there might be additional audio at the same time.If I am mixing audio from multiple tracks and later decide that the mix volume is too high or low, I will adjust that from either the master audio track (B key toggles it on and off the interface), or send them to a bus.
I also apply the Track Compressor set to ‘Limit Levels to -6db’ at the track or project level (or both).

If you made them a -R, try giving them a +R (or visa versa).

If you are applying FX to sequences that are made up of many timeline events, then the most convienient way to apply them is either to add them to tracks, as you’ve outlined, or have the sequence as a project and apply them to nested veg files in the assembled project.

Mostly I am referring to the secondary recording being shorter than the first, however there can be an occasional tape glitch where the previous recording is not totally overwritten.
