August 5, 2005 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Field Order for AJA KONA (FCP) on Mac for 3ds Max Files?[mark pigott] “Can anyone tell me which order to come out of Max in order to
go into FCP for Mac with the KONA board?”Your best bet coming out of any 3d app ( windows especially) would be Animation Codec. That way what ever editing application you use will create the proper filed order for the editing application or platform. This is the same process that apple uses for all motion graphics (ie: Motion and LiveType) files.

August 4, 2005 at 1:04 am in reply to: AJA HD10C2 – HDTV Serial Digital to Component Converter[Tim Maloney] “This thing can work in both 59.94 and 60.00.
I should be able to see PAL SD on a set from the AJA from the Varicam in 60.00 @25P”that is correct Tim, the device needs to see the 60 hz so that the Varicam can properly record the flagged frames for PAL.
From AJA Tech support
< I > The HD10C2 works with all “PAL” 25/50hz based and all “NTSC” based inputs without any switch setting. The only time a 60hz setting relates to PAL is on our HD10A –The HD10A has a switch for 59.94 vs 60 hz. This switch needs to be in the 60 position for 50hz input. < I/>

[Craig Ernst] “use a Kona 2 with K-box and all Kona recommended hardware and software. Is there a “capture off set” I need to be concerned with while using drivers 1.1.2. “
the Capture Offset in FCP is in
AV settings > Device Control Presetsthere is not a separate place for the Kona 2

[Itamar Kool] “Hi Gary, Thanks again. If I understand you properly, it means that the Kona 2 will do what Rudy said it would do with the video. Only the audio would not be captured properly. Since we already shot the film in 25p we will have to capture it that way too; isn’t that right??”
The card will work as rudy says it does but you do not understand the prob
OK one more time.
You may have shot the Varicam footage at 25 fps but is NOT on tape at 25fps.
The Varicam records ALL content at 60p.
The Varicam records all footage not shot at 24p( 23.98) or 60p (59.94) to be played back at 24p just like film. this affects your workflow. It was built this way for a reason- so that it can mimic a film camera not video. it never actually records just the 25fps frames.Once again this is NOT an issue the Kona 2 but How PAL is handled in HD currently on the Varicam.
if you want further discussion stop by the AJA booth during IBC.

[Itamar Kool] ” Thing is that my cameraman shot this film in 25p. So we can’t go back to 24. Also Rudy from AJA mailed to me that I can create a setting with the Kona 2″
Itamar- The Varicam reads ALL off-speed footage (either over-cranked or under-cranked) always in reference to 24 frames, so even if you shoot 25fps the DVCPROHD Varicam settings in the Kona 2 it is going to treat the audio as offspeed as the Varicam references the audio on those 25fps tapes at 24fps. So all of the audio you capture at 25 fps will have the audio playing too fast.
This is the way the Varicam lays info to tape and not with FCP or the Kona board as I said. It has to do with the way the Frame Rate Conversion works based on the Hardware device’s capture capability.gary adcock

[paul boyer] “Can I get the 1200a to give me timecode burns into FCP5 through the firewire? I need to make window burns and want to eliminate the render for the timecode reader. “
Sorry No, Supers are a video out thing..
why not just dig the tape and use FCP’s TC generator? on a DP 2.5 it will work in real time.

[Itamar Kool] ” I was sort of shocked not to find a Kona 2 setting for DVCPRO HD 720 in 25p. I did find this setting on my Blackmagic driver that I use for my Kona SD. Which means that the setting is possible.”
Itamar, HD and SD are very different in the scheme of things and just because there are available settings for 25fps in SD does not mean that the Varicam / FCP combo directly supports the HD PAL specs.
The issue is in how the Varicam records to tape and not with FCP (this time) The Varicam bases it’s capture speed on a 24 frame time base (even though it lays 60fps to tape) and you will need to use the older 24fps-25fps workflows in place for film to achieve this. Go back and read in the posts by me in both the Kona and Varicam Forums in the last 30 days for a more complete explanation.gary adcock

[Mitch Ives] “I can’t agree with this advice. The G-RAID is marginal (in my mind unnacceptable) for 10 bit uncompressed. Since I’ve been doing 10 bit through SDI longer than most, I feel qualified to say that.”
I disagree- I’m with Walter, I can and do use the g-raid ( and lacie BDE’s) for DVCPROHD editing and 10 Bit UC Standard Def on my laptop. I always run the hard drives from a PCA card NEVER from the system bus. Knowing the problem from the posts, I am going to assume that Eli is not doing this, but trying to capture to the laptop with the 1200a connected to the FW400 port and the G-raid on the 800 port.
Other things that cause dropped frames are anything that is taking attention away from FCP, — CD’s or DVD’s in the machine, itunes running, being connected to the internet, having less than the proper config for FCP ( to capture HD on a laptop you need I gig RAM Min. in addition to the FW card.)

[Vincent Rice] “My statement is fact. FW400 (the digital transfer protocol) is perfectly capable of handling 2 streams of DVC copmressed HD @ 100Mbs. Whether it works in a real situation is entirely dependent on what drives are on one end and what computer is on the other.”
Fact and Reality in video are completely different things. You have substituted your own reality ( ala Walter’s tag line) I have in fact never been able to work on 2 streams of DVCPROHD on a FW 400 drive. and believe me I have tried, and I was showing 720pHD on running on FW nearly a year before FCP4.5 was released with that ability built in.
What the bus can do and what the drives can do are 2 completely different things. Telling people here that it can be done when those of us that work in HD are telling them it can’t be done is a great disservice to the readers of this list. Walter and I alone have probably cut over 1000 hrs of DVCPROHD content, and between the 2 of us we have done our fair share of debugging the HD process.

[Vincent Rice] “FW400 is perfectly capable of two DVCProHD streams”
not for HD.
a Single hard drive cannot sustain the data rate needed to do 2 streams of DVCPROHD for more than 2 mins. THis is HD understand that you need to get the right gear to make it work consistently.
I cannot believe the number of people here wanting to save $500. on hard drive to use, when they spend that much or more to rent a 1200a deck for a single day or $1200+ to rent a camera.gary adcock
