  • G-Raid no good for DVCPRO HD?

Posted by Eli Mavros on July 24, 2005 at 9:57 pm

    Hello all,
I am writing to say that I am very displeased with the performance of the G-Raid when using DVCPRO HD media. The box says up to 3 streams of DVCPRO HD can be played using this drive, but I am having problems with just one stream. Every time that I play a clip, it will get stuck on a frame. I have no problem fast forwarding and rewinding through the media, but playing in real time is a real pain. Has anyone had any similar problems? Did I get a bad drive, and should I send it back? It is really frustrating. Thanks.

I have a G5 hooked up to the hard drive via fw800 with no other firewire devices hooked up.

    Respect,
    Eli

Problem is FW800 on the G5 – spend a few $$$ on a FW800 card and you’ll get better performance – we get 2 streams with ours with no problems

what if I ran it on FW400…or is that just crazy talk?

    Thanks,

FW400 is perfectly capable of two DVCProHD streams

DVCPro HD is no problem here and I’m running the G-RAID through the standard Mac FW-800 port and I even have two units daisy chained. I just posted a review on the G-RAID showing the results of various types of media and DVCPro HD is one of the media I tested.

Just bought and installed a G-Raid. I’ll be using it for the first time today.

[Vincent Rice] “FW400 is perfectly capable of two DVCProHD streams”

    not for HD.
a Single hard drive cannot sustain the data rate needed to do 2 streams of DVCPROHD for more than 2 mins. THis is HD understand that you need to get the right gear to make it work consistently.
I cannot believe the number of people here wanting to save $500. on hard drive to use, when they spend that much or more to rent a 1200a deck for a single day or $1200+ to rent a camera.

I’m going to have to agree here. What surprises me is the flood of people who seem to want to go with minimum config’s on arrays all of a sudden. While some people may have gotten a two drive system to work, I ask why? Why not get a faster four drive system? The new 1TB G-raid cost more than my four drive 1 TB SATA array, and my SATA array runs circles around the G-raid.

Yep, I’ll agree there with more speed with the better configs. I have a Medea FCR2X which is worth every penny spent on it. If you’re a professional earning money with your system, then you really should invest in the highest performing product.

FW400 should not be used for anything but regular DV, period. And even there, you’re giving up a lot of RT performance with FCP.

Er.. nowhere in my post did I suggest using only one drive. My statement is fact. FW400 (the digital transfer protocol) is perfectly capable of handling 2 streams of DVC copmressed HD @ 100Mbs. Whether it works in a real situation is entirely dependent on what drives are on one end and what computer is on the other. Personally I use a SATA array.

In theory and maybe based on a “disk speed test” it might appear that way, but in reality, I would not bank on it working with any regularity. Using FW400 for DVCPro HD would certainly not be a recommended setup for any serious daily work. If you’re just offlining a project, then maybe, but if you really want to edit with DVCPro HD, FW400 would never be my recommendation.
