Make sure you do a hardware test after installing the RAM.

I would try trashing the waveform cache files. I’ve never done it, but I assume that doing this would force FCP to rebuild the waveforms on your clips.

I’m you’ve done this already, but quiting and re-opening FCP. I’ve only experienced sync problems when working with HD uncompressed footage and this usually solved the problem. Also, turn off the external video playback option.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

A little more info might help you get an answer. What version software and OS are you on? Is this a new system that you just set up? Or is this an old system that used to work fine and now this problem has suddenly occurred?

If you just set up the system then it might be the way you’re monitoring the output of FCP. Are you looking at the canvas video, or an external NTSC monitor?

May 12, 2005 at 6:35 pm in reply to: after effects preview using AJA IO

Since everything else seems to work just fine, and this is just a minor function that I don’t use a lot anyway, I’d rather not go through the hassle of deleting prefs and re-loading software. In the past I’ve found that re-loading software is always the first thing I’m told to do and it never solves the problem, and usually compounds it because of overlooked updates and settings lost. I appreciate the advice, but I’ll pass.

I do a lot of straight DV stuff. But when I do turn on my IO, it’s for NTSC US 10bit uncompressed.

I’ve had no problems with dropped frames as long as you’re using a external media drive connected via FW800. (I know, I know it’s all on the same bus) but for some reason things just seem to run smoothly for me this way. I cannot vouch for how FCP 5 will behave on a powerbook. I would think it would still be fine as long as you’re just doing DV.

I own a 120 Gg D2 that has been lugged around in backpacks, and breifcases. It has never had a problem. It’s been used mostly for DV editing. I’ve recommended LaCie D2’s to several clients and they’ve all had good luck so far.

When I’m cramming an edit suite into my carry-on bag, less is best for me.
