We have had both.
The HD-Link up scale SD to HD was poor (actually bad), this may have changed with new firmare but at the time we could not use them with any SD source.
The first generation HDPs had a defective component that caused sparkles in the HD video, all three have been swapped out under warrenty and have been clean and rock solid reliable.

P.S. Black levels on the HDS have been fine.

November 29, 2005 at 12:39 am in reply to: Why A quad is being delivered to me this week….Your “main” problem is that you are taking apart your working system in hopes that you will be able to put a new one back together before you get an HD job.
Can you predict the date of your next HD job?
I predict that you will see the UL5Ds ship before the Kona2e (not even announced product).
Last time I looked, a Quad machine is no faster than your current dual 2.7, this will change when Apple updates FCP to use the 4 processors.

It is the card(s) you install into you computer (host) the connect to external or additional Serial ATA disk drives.

Just cause you said so I checked…
LaCie Biggest S2S 2.5TB does not have RAID 5 according to their web site.

You are getting great feedback from some of the best “guys” arround.
Now just to throw a monkey into the wrench…
Inorder to use a new Quad Core G5, you will have to wait for AJA to release a KONA-2e, PCI Express KONA2.
When that happens, you will also need a PCIe HBA, Host Bus Adapter.
Also, most current Serial ATA RAIDS offer no data protection at all. And they are have very flimsy serial ATA connections to each enclosure/drive. (See other comments)
You may want to consider a pair of Highpoint RocketRAID 2224 cards. They use a special “Infiniband” connector that is much better for external devices.
https://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/rr2224.htmAnd a pair of Highpoint X4 Raid enclosures, also “Infiniband”, that have controllers with RAID5 protection built in. Then populate the X4s with four 500GB drives each. Create a RAID 5 on each X4 and then software stripe the two into a RAID0.
https://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/x4.htmYes they are limited to 4 drives per enclosure, but for under $5,000.00 you can have 3 TB of Raid5 storage with 300MBps+ performance and RAID5 security.

November 20, 2005 at 6:04 pm in reply to: .mov different on PC than Mac?! AJA 525 codec to blame?Check the quality setting of the playback on the PC. I believe it is under movie properties. Make sure high quality is checked.
The file should look the same on both the mac and pc, except for monitors setting of course.
And the AJA codec is meaningless if you have converted the file to DVNTSC codec.

If I understand your question correctly, it is not true.
We are getting 6+ streams of DVCProHD 24p.
You should be able to do the 2+ streams with the LaCie S2S.
The “guy” may have been confused and was thinking about Uncompressed HD. If this was the case, the LaCei will not do a single stream of HD uncompressed.

1 – ProMax is a good reseller, fair and honest.
2 – The “major trouble” is not major but it is a bug, you can work arround the issue. It just takes time. Infact if you shot your fooatge in 24p you will not seen the problem.
3 – You will need more disk space.
4 – Your CPU is fine (how much ram do you have), your OS is fine, your display is to small.
From the numbers you quoted it appears that ProMax is setting you up for DVCProHD disk storage. If you want to capture 8 bit or 10 bit you will need alot more (and faster) disk storage. Please be sure your reseller knows that you are thinking about doing uncompressed HD. You should capture 8 bit or 10 bit if you are planning extensive high end visual effects, otherwise the DVCProHD codec is very usable.
Do you have access to a 1200A for capture and layoff?
How do you plan to color correct?
I say go for it, but just plan on spending every dollar you get to aquire more equipment and training.
